Exactly, DeadSpace with any other cam would suck. It would be like playing Resident Evil as an FPS, it just wouldn't capture the horror element.

In regards to the OP, Left4Dead and Serious Sam offer what you are looking for.

Crysis and Crysis Warhead. You can either blast your way through a camp, or snipe them one by one using the invisibility suit, it's up to you. Either way it's packed full of action.

What are the system specs you'd need for decent performance in Serious Sam 2? Is it quite GPU intensive?

Cant go wrong with painkiller TBH, you may have to set a core to the game if you have a quadcore, causes issues else.

No, it's a very basic game. My old 128mb 6800NU and opteron 144 with 1gb PC3200 would run it perfectly.

Obviously the Serious Sam and Painkiller games are the main ones in this category, you might also like to check out the Doom series although they are getting on a bit now.

Regarding the Painkiller physics, they are (loosely) based on Quakeworld as the developers were/are fans of the game. There are some differences though, for example bunnyhopping is handled differently (arguably more intuitively).

Bet on Soldier has some arcade style gameplay but is also very buggy and not really that good a game.

C&C Renegade and Red Faction 1/2 all have a nice array of powerful weaponry, not really in the PK/SS style though and take life a bit more seriously.
