Hi Everyone, I'm new here and pretty new to building my own PC, I have upgraded/replaced components before but thats about it!

I am looking to build a PC to be used to hold a fair amount of media (so Likely a 1Tb+ HD, although it seems a lot of HDD's seem to be larger anyway)... Also it will be used for general office like tasks, and maybe running some CAD software (Catia V5).

Not really to into PC gaming as I've got an xbox, so gaming specs probably not needed.

Would it be better to have one HD partitioned to hold the OS and documents, and another HD to hold the media (would like media separate).

Other Requirements:

TV Tuner for freeview
Wireless n NIC
HDMI out
Options with and without an OS

Budget ~£500

Thanks in advance for your help!

Can't see any freeview cards on OCuk but I think you should be able to find one elsewhere for £50 ish.

Thanks for that Redmint,

Is a graphics card not required then? I would have thought CAD work would use a fair bit of video memory?

If your holding a lot of media I'd have thought getting a couple of 1-2TB drives in there and then RAID'ing them for safety (as opposed to speed) would be a good idea?

That is an Idea... I could possibly increase the budget if necessary.

That however needs to include,

Motherboard
Ram
Case
PSU
Processor
Graphics
HDD's
Wireless N Card
TV Card

Am I dreaming to get all of this for 600?

Just to confirm will be used for 3D CAD, Storing a bit of media and maybe some photoshop when I decide to learn.

MSI P67A-C45 Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge) ** B3 REVISION **

Is this a suitable replacement, and its only an extra £15,

Other than that all ok?

Yeah everything looks good, good choice of graphics card and RAM. Personally, I would change the CPU to a 2500k which then gives you the choice of overclocking, as you can safely get to ~4.4GHz with stock cooler. It's only £15 more expensive and comes with a brand new game which you can sell to recover the cost. But that's just an optional upgrade, nothing wrong with what you've got. But yeah that MSI board is good for the price.

I've done a few changes and dropped the HD down to 500gb, which should be ok at the moment as I've still got my media on an external hard drive. Can get a larger one at a later date.

You've pretty much built a gaming PC there! I personally would love it to death but I'm sure you could meet your original requirements for a lot lot less if you went down the AMD route... jus' sayin'

He's right, but a sandy bridge system would last you longer

That's no lie but you've specced an overcloking gaming monster of a SB when you could monster the tasks you actually need doing with a lesser system and still build in plenty of future proofing - AMD v. Intel I'll leave that one for Bulldozer. ;)

True, I'm no fan boy and I will wait until Bulldozer has been release to speculate further lol. Buying now however, Sandy bridge would offer a longer lasting system

Pretty sure he means you'd be better off saving money and going with a non-k version CPU i.e 2500, 2400, etc rather than the 2500k.
I disagree however, because yeah, any i5 will give you a fast system but even the 2300 (the cheapest i5) is only £22 less than the 2500k (and only £14 for oem) and imo you don't save enough money to justify losing 0.5-2GHz (depending on how well it overclocks).

One more question, aside from a cable to connect the monitor, what other cables would I have to buy for this build? Does the PSU come with a cable? etc

your psu comes with all the cables you will need and you will get sata cables for your hdd and optical drives in the motherboard box aswell.
