Looking for a nice plant for my office desk at work.. Needs to be hardy and survive OK in an office environment.. I have a window seat so it will get some light.

I would prefer something out of the ordinary.. not too big to dit on the desk..

Any ideas?

How about a Venus Fly Trap?

Keep it happy by giving it distilled water or water collected from a tumble drier condenser or even the melted ice water from a freezer.

On a very serious note, I am looking for a deskside friend for the office at work... is a Venus fly trap worth getting? If I keep it in the office, where there aren't many flies, is there something else I can feed it with?

You can catch flies and feed it. They can be easy to keep if you have good mossey soil, make sure it is damp and humid.

and don't make it close the trap with your finger!

Japanese Peace LIly. It doesn't need much sunlight, watering once a week, white flowers. Potted from M&S or Waitrsoe from £5.

I'm intrigued... am I suppose to keep a herd of flies in a jam jar and try to tip them on to the trap :p LOL

Can't I feed them ham or something?

:D "Spec me a plant" I'd laugh if you went to a garden centre and said that. :)

if someone walked up to me at work and said that (i work at a garden centre) i'd give them a high five :D

i'd get a fancy decorative pot, some gravel, some cactus compost and a few cacti, stick it all in the pot and viola - a nice looking, erm, pot with cacti in it

you can tell i'm an expert

:p

Nope. You'll kill it if you feed it dead things or close it with your finger.

It uses masses of energy closing the trap, and if it doens't sense movement, it doesn't digest so it's wasted energy.

It'll feed itself.

Hum.. ok that throws the office pet idea out of the window.. unless I buy live crickets or something... are they too much to digest?

This thread has inspired me to get a Peace Lilly for my home/office.

I hope it won't object to me playing war games on my XBox 360, being a Peace Lilly and all :D

Far too much.

To be honest it'll be quite happy without being fed... it'll only need/catch about 3 flies per 'leaf' anyway in its entire life time.

Get one anyway... it'll be fun.

a cactus, 'Cereus peruvianus'
it's meant to absorb 'harmful ions' from your computer screen, or something equally as useful as that ;)

or a peace lily, we have one, she's gorgeous :p

I wouldn't trust myself with a cactus. Beer + Cactus = A&E :)

What film is this from? He has this plant and it stays with him throughout the movie.
