Spec me a plex player which will allow me to use 5.1/DTS

Hi,

I currently have a selection of NowTV boxes around the house, these are sideloaded with plex and work excellently.

Now though, i come to building a dedicated cinema room, i need a plex box which can output 5.1 and DTS via optical so that i can get full surround sound from my plex library.

My receiver is high end, but old, and therefore does not feature HDMI, i need the audio to come in the form of coaxial or optical.

What do you guys use? :)
 
Anything really, ideally with an optical out - most Android type boxes, any PC, PS3/4, etc, etc.

Even if the device only has HDMI out you can get adaptors fairly cheaply.
 
The new Roku 4 has an optical out port. The earlier Rokus, Fire TVs, Apple TVs etc do not have optical.

Other than that I think you are looking at a HTPC, PS3/4, XB1 etc.
 
I use a V2 black Now TV box with plex and a adapter that splits the hdmi i(separate optical or rca digital out to my 5.1 amp) Plays Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS and AAC 5.1 perfectly.

Oh very interesting, is that using a generic eBay adapter? I see them for £9, I already have a whole bunch of nowtv boxes and wasn't aware that they did 5.1 at all!
 
Plex version I'm using on Now TV via hdmi out to converter optical- rca to my 5.1 amp runs 5.1 perfectly (just set plex and now TV box to dolby digital /dts in settings and not to just stereo) .

Update. My 5.1 system is quite old and only supports dolby digital 5.1 via optical/rca. Luckily I've got Plex to play DTS, AAC, Dolby Digital Plus also to my amp (obviously converts it)

Can i confirm which plex version you have sideloaded onto the nowTV?

Reason i ask, i am using RARflix classic, and i cannot see any 5.1 options within the app itself (although 5.1 options are available within the NowTV settings outside of the app).

That is the old version, i suppose i could buy an old version but it seems to make more sense to use a converter (if they work)...

Plex 3.1.4 sideloaded. Fire4ktv also works with adapter but as my 5.1 amp is dolby digital only Plex on Fire4ktv only works with AC3 audio and I couldn't get it to work with AAC 5.1 or DTS. Plex on roku/skynow with adapter works with everything here <DTS, Dolby Plus, AAC 5.1 etc> (all 5.1 to my dolby digital only amp plex converts obviously )

Update. I've tried, Fire Stick, old Fire TV box, 4kFireTV and Nvidia Shield. Imho Plex on Roku/Skynow works best for all audio formats.
