Spec me: A push bike!

You can get a roadworthy bike for £50 if you look carefully. As for theft, I never said he shouldn't also get a lock. Vandalism is basically pot luck - if it's going to happen it will happen regardless of the bike you own.

Yes its pot luck. But you can improve your odds. I rarely leave any of my bikes parked in public. But sometimes you've no choice. Folding bike it's handy as you can store it a lot easier. In a cupboard under a desk, in the boot.

Sometimes there's bike lockers at stations. Maybe check out what's available if you still want to leave a regular bike at the station.

He could buy some bolt cutters for £100...

I see the price of bolt cutters around Manchester is higher than other parts of the country, supply and demand? ;)

My recommendation for your budget would be to steal one.

Totally missing the point - he's asked which should he buy, not which should he steal! ;)

As mentioned solarp - buy S/H for your budget you'll get much more than buying new.

If you're leaving it at the station then you're really looking for an 'old beater' that functions ok. The most unassuming, basic and scruffy looking bike you can find so it's left alone!

Yeah that is a good point, although I live in a good area and the bike shed at the station has room for about 30 bikes (all in those fancy upright galvanized metal enclosures) My job involves a lot of walking/tubing around London so a fold up wont do for that reason.

But as per your suggestions, I'll keep an eye in the free ad's, fleabay and bumtree, I'll also have a look around a bike shop this weekend to get a feel for what I like, again its just to potter to the station and maybe a cycle around the area when I am bored :)

Thought about going to a second hand bike shop? I know they usually buy them cheap, service them (haha) and then sell them on just as cheap..

Theres a shop by me that does that, i told a guy at work to go there and get came into work the following monday on a second hand bike that was half decent for £85.

Hes just bought a roadie off ebay for around £2-250 and has spend another £200 getting it to a fit state as the guy that he bought it off ruined it trying to fit different parts that were barely compatible. Be careful using ebay, people can talk like they know what theyre doing but in reality they dont.
