spec me a razor

I've just switched from using Gillette shaving foam to using the Darby shaving cream that comes from with a pack of 100 blades. It's made a massive difference. Only problem is gentlemans shop don't sell it on it's own.

HOLY REVIVAL!!

Any news on that Merkur platypus?

I've ordered a Merkur and 10 blades, so ideally it would be nice to hear how you got on :D
Sorry - I totally forgot about this thread :p.

Definitely the Merkur. Bought it recently, along with some platinum tipped blades, and it's awesome. I also got some Prorasso pre-shave cream (seriously, get this stuff - it works wonders) and some alcohol free aftershave balm. I'm using some foam designed for sensitive skin by "<insert random salon "guru" here>" but it works well.

They combine for the best shave I've ever had, took me a while to get used to the safety razor, but at last - a close shave that doesn't hurt.

I am going to go back to

SINGLE Blade disposables.

- Gilette
- Bic

(I currently use a Mach 3, and get some ingrown hairs on my neck)

How do you shave your neck?

- downwards towards your chest?

- upwards, towards your chin?

Everyone will be different. Have a very close look at your neck in the mirror and give it a good rub to learn in which direction the hair grows. Mine grows in different directions at different positions on my neck.

My method is to shave with the grain, rinse, soap up, shave at 90 degrees to the grain and if I want a really close shave, I'll rinse again, soap up again and then shave against the grain.

As for the blades, the Merkur blades are indeed crap compared to the others. My personal preference is either Feather or Israeli blades - the Feather blades being my favourite as they are ridiculously sharp.

i have learned that more passes is better

dont try and egt all the hair off with 1 pass

be extremely gentle and do 1 pass even if you missed bits

if you try and go over the bits you missed this will cause soreness, bleeding, itching, cuts, redness, etc

if you miss a bit leave it, you need to re coat with foam before trying to get it

then in your 2nd pass change direction and go gently again

you should need 6 gentle passes

first pass downwards

second pass left to right diagonally

like this

3rd pass right to left diagonally

4ths pass left to right

------------------>

5th pass right to left

<-------------------

6th pass upwards

basically with each pass you get rid of more and more stubble, and you may repeat a pass twice if you feel like it

most people think they have to get rid of all the hair in one go and if they dont get it all the first time they have to the second time, this is a big mistake, its a gradual step by step reduction, you have to take your time

shaving properly should take 45 minutes

therefore when im in a rush i use a mach 3

when shaving with a mach 3 it should take no longer than 3 minutes

feathers are far too sharp they just cut your face to pieces on the first shave with them, 2nd shave also, the 3rd shave with them is fine as for the 4th and 5th after that

i use israelis 1st shave is perfect so is the 2nd and 3rd, ive never used one after the 3rd shave because they are so cheap, there is no point in bothering beause a new blade will be far superior

I have never ever understood the facination people seem to have with razors. I buy disposable razors and find they are usually good for around 2-3 shaves on my fairly coarse fast growing hair.

I'm all for good quality products but razors is something that is lost on me, they produce a very close shave when used against the grain, what more can i ask

Thought I'd update the thread with my experience.

Anyway, got the Merkur 37 through the post today, along with a pack of 10 blades. I've ordered a pack of those Israeli blades just to compare with these stock Merkur ones, but they haven't arrived yet.

First impressions; Wow, this thing is small! I expected it to be a bit bigger (coming from a history of Gillette razors) but it doesn't feel too small, and I have big hands so that's saying something. I probably should have waited another day to have my first shave as I was only sporting the "sandpaper" stubble, and I used some foam-in-a-can which will probably get me lynched here, but nonetheless I am in awe! It's sad to say, but honestly, I am astounded by the comfort behind the razor. I had to stop and check I was doing things properly.. It felt like I was scraping off the foam, and not actually cutting

Nevertheless, I just washed my face now, and despite several obvious flaws (in my method) I couldn't be happier. I can't wait to try it on some heavy-duty growth now with a nice brush and cream! If your fed up of the overpriced Gillette "OMG 5 is beta than 4!!!1911!!" blades, or just fancy a change I cannot recommend this highly enough. I won't be going back.

i know bit of a thread revival but just had to post. been looking to get new razor for a while now due to the fact i always seem to get a lot of ingrown hairs and little white heads after everytime i shave with gillette fusion.so thougth i'd try old style razor i didnt wanna go out straight and buy a merkur like suggested incase it turned out no different so brought a wilkinson sword 1 from boots it cost bout £12. i really wish i'd just gone on what you guys said because even the above razor was an improvement and a joy to use. so i'm going to order merkur asap plus a brush and soap.

Nothing beats a good old disposable. Gillette do some good ones with the Aloe Vera strip.

I have used the Nivea sensitive range of grooming products for years including the shaving gel and aftershave balm finished off with a good Q10 treatment.

Always worked a treat :)

Mach3 here, had one for my birthday through the post one year randomly, used it ever since.

sensor 3 excel here, really good for sensitive skin... have tried so many other brands but always come back to sensor 3... might try this merkur stuff you guys are goign on about..

I can get a clean shave with disposables but they irritate my skin and only last one or two shaves at most. Fusion is a bit better irritation wise but I think I'm gonna get a merkur for when I have to shave regularly. At the mo I'm a lazy student so just trim it with a beard trimmer :p
