Spec Me a repmobile

That depends if you deem a Celica which only manages 190bhp by having a really high rev limiter so, in the real world it drives more like a 160bhp car as a 'fast car' or not I guess. If you do it would perhaps explain why the Passat lit your fire so to speak :p

Much like many other high revving n/a engines then

You need to be in the right gear to be in lift for it to perform like similar cars in its class.

Its a small capacity, high revving, 4-pot - much like many engines made by Honda etc

No it doesn't. It made the journey frustrating and annoying as it didn't have the power to safely pass slower moving traffic even using crawler lanes. Twice I had to give up half way up a hill and pull in behind slower traffic to let the cars I was holding up go past.

A rubbish engine which ruined the car.

This class of car now requires at least a 130bhp diesel.

I too have had the misfortune of driving one of these. I have to agree with fox on this they are a terrible engine for the car.

not sure what you were doing differently, but the only overtaking manouvres i've had to give up on have been stupid attempts anyway, normally on A/B single carriage roads.

Generally i find that as long as i back off, give myself a decent run up and be hitting the speed at the start of the crawler lane (as an example) then it generally gets the drop, and does the job. Far from perfect, agreed, but hardly dangerous. If someone pulls out on me, then that can slow the process, but doesnt stop it. Besdies, power (as in BHP) doesnt really play a part in these scenarios, its the torque that matters, and its certainly torquier than a 1.6 petrol for instance.

I doubt it thinking the manufacturer's top speed is quoted at 117mph. :p

115mph (actual) was routinely achievable (which isnt exactly rocket ship hen compared to the 170 of my bike), but who cares about absolute top speed anyway? Dont really fancy being banned. Would much prefer good change of speed from 70-90, and be able to cruise at 90-95, which it did without batting an eye lid. Or non-motorway A roads at 85 or so.

As i say, this experience is gained from doing 20k miles in 6 months in this car. Would have preferred more power, of course, but at stock it was liveable. The missus even hated the speeds it was capable of down country roads, resulting in many a bollocking!

I didnt do any normal overtakes in it becuase I had absolutely no confidence in its ability to complete the maneouver safely.

I took it from Plymouth to Southampton, a journey involving just 6 miles of Motorway. The rest is A roads, much of it single carriageway but when you get to hills they open up into 2 lanes going up hill to pass slower moving traffic. With a 110 dCi, I had to give up, pull back in and become the slower moving traffic everyone else was passing.

I didnt expect a rocketship and I wasn't comparing it to the 5 Series - but come on, it should be able to safely pass trucks and caravans by accelerating reasonably well past them up a hill.

Why are we comparing 2 cars from different makers exactly?

For all you know the laguna could have had a fault (likely) and not be developing the right amount of power.

Of course, its utterly meaningless, the less powerful, heavier Passat would be much faster ;) And of course the Laguna 110 dCI is the only 110ish bhp diesel I've ever driven, right ;)

Just buy your rep a decent Mondeo TDCi 130. He'll sell whatever tat you flog much better if he arrives fresh and relaxed, whereas if he arrives stressed after a crap journey in a poverty spec Passat he wont be on form ;)

whats your opinion of the build quality differences of the passat and the mondeo? The drivers environment? It seems you know both cars intimately, so i'm interested in your thoughts.

Personally i'd have to say the VAG cars i have used have all been of good quaslity workmanship, finished well and buiult to last (as i am sure you agree driving a BMW). Cant say the focus i drove 2 years ago was of comparable quality. Is the new Mondeo massivley better?

Mk3 Mondeo is not as good as the previous model Passat. New Passat has some shocking plastics in areas but feels solid in others. Probably still slightly better than Mk3 Mondeo.

Mk4 Mondeo is, however, excellent. Apart from the annoying centre console bit the quality inside is excellent, approaching 3 series levels. I really liked the Mk4 Mondeo, did 300 miles in it let down only by a crap engine.

Don't forget how crappy the glovebox and sun visors are.

Anyway bought a 2007 07 Skoda octavia elegance 2.0 TDi PD with 13k for 10.5k

Bargain.

I thought you wanted low depreciation? And surely your Dad bought it ;)

That car was £20k new - in 1 year, it has lost £9500! In one year!

I cant think of a higher depreciating car than that :p Decent enough choice though, better than the Passats, but the opposite of what you asked us to spec you :p

If you're in hospital, you will be glad we sell the tat we do ;)

Well, our company bought it,

I think all repmobiles will depreciate roughly at the same price, anyway look up how much a 4 year old octavia with high miles goes for, still a fair bit!

I don't think we can get any lower depreciation tbh, in fact they will all probbably be worth similar amounts.

Can you find any other car that I can buy now for 10.5k and in theory sell three years down the line for £5ishk.

Well clearly they dont all depreciate at the same rate otherwise they'd all cos the same used!
Guess so, anyway this car I bought has the original invoice for the car for 13.5k from a broker, so it's hardly 20k new.
