Spec me a Science Ficton author

Thanks - I'll give Hamilton a go first. Should I start with 'The Dreaming Void'?

Read the Nights Dawn trilogy.

They are perfect scifi, rest of his stuff is pretty poor.

For pretty basic hack n slash (but enjoyable) try Horus Heresy or Gaunts Ghost series from Games Workshop.

lol good choice, make sure you get Judas unchained before you finish it so you don't get the shakes. After reading this thread have loaded it back into my tablet as well. Time to re read :)

Did you really enjoy that?

I loved Nights Dawn but I can honestly say Pandora was one of the worst books I ever read.

Thus happens, then that happens, then that happened, then this happened and them this them that blah blah blaaahhhhh!!! Just found it a boring list of things happening with no reasoning behind it, really poor sadly as I was expecting and hoping for a lot after Night Dawn :(

I'm glad I've seen peoples opinions of Hamilton's other work here. I'm reading A Naked God at the moment, and have really enjoyed the Nights Dawn trilogy, it's kept me going after reading all of Banks' work. But I'll avoid his other books I think, don't want to spoil my opinion of him.

So as to help the thread out, here's a list of books that I've just ordered. Iain M. Banks is one of my favourite writers at the moment, so hopefully these recommendations will suit you as well:

-Enders Game (Orson Scott Card)
-The Forever War (Joe Haldeman)
-Gateway (Frederik Pohl)

Would really, really, really recomend the Dune series if you haven't read that.

Frank Herbert is a god of scifi but just don't touch the stuff his son did! Such disgusting profiteering off perfect scifi is a travesty!

Need to read them in this order

The Commonwealth Saga
Pandora's Star (2004), Part 1
Judas Unchained (2005), Part 2

Then

The Void Trilogy
The Dreaming Void (2007), Part 1
The Temporal Void (2008), Part 2
The Evolutionary Void (2010), Part 3

These three follow the first two, same universe just set more in the future

Best books I have ever read, only got into Hamilton as Pandora's star was on offer, Couldn't put them down
Just finished the void trilogy blew me away, love his stuff cant wait for more.
Just pre ordered Alistair Reynolds Blue Remembered Earth (Poseidons Children 1) part of a new trilogy:D

Just avoid anything his son did that's Dune-related. :(

Indeed, this is good advice, the two books the son and anderson cowrote to finish the dune saga wold have been completed better by any alevel literature student.
They were hideous rotten mess, paragraphs and sentences repeated, charcters resurected and killed without purpose, concepts abused in an abhorrent mess.
I felt dirty after reading and no amount of soap could take the feeling away.

Aye Hamilton's books tend to be best read as series.

Pandora's Star is very much setting the scene for what happens in Judas Unchained, it's good in it's own right but you spend a lot of the book with characters that you don't know much about, whilst in JU you have the more formed characters and an understanding of them a bit more :)

I found "The reality dysfunction" really hard to get into (it took about 3 attempts), but once I was in the mood for it, and got into it, I read it then "the Neutronium alchemist" in short order and spent what seemed like ages waiting for "the Naked God".

What is Julian May like?

I read the Saga of Pliocene Exile when I was at school and have re-read them 3 or 4 times in the intervening years and really like them. The Galactic Milieu Series which are direct follow up in a time line sense but tell the back story to the major characters in the Pliocene Exile books are also very well written and really enjoyable.

A bit older but Philip K Dick? Lots of decent classic sci fi books - Do Androids dream of electric sheep (what Blade Runner is based on), We can remember that for you wholesale (Total Recall), lots of others..

+1 My favourite Scifi author and source of my name ('Clans of Alphane moon'), short books full of interesting ideas.

Frank Herbets Dune is a classic, personally can't stand the other books in the series but his other works are good too, dragon of the sea and destination void stand out of the top of my head.

Also defenatly not modern but a great sc-fi writer HG Wells.
