Looking to build a new server.......

All its going to be doing is PHP, IIS, Windows Server 2003 and MySQL.....and lots of data storage....

I also need it on the cheap....sub 500 preferable....

RAID 5 as data and uptime will be important...

Multiple PSU if possible...or something reliable...

You're not going to get multiple PSUs for under £500. You say that data and uptime is important to you however you want to do it on the cheap?? Get yourself on the HP site and buy a decent rackmount server- you'll regret it otherwise. We use ML350's at work and the build quality on them is great :) Should get yourself a decent one for between £800 and £900

EDIT: Why are you bumping your post after just 16 mins?

Really impatient tonite....

This server is for home use, so i cant be blowing it all on a hp rack mount. I also dont have a rack at home.

Im gonna mirror 2 200gb hard disks.
Simple case
Decent PSU
Dual Core Pentium D 805 CPU
Cheap Mobo
2nd NIC
1gb DDR 2
and a DVD-ROM Drive

Which i managed to pull off for £260 delivered....with some competitior shizzle...(what can i say...overclockers arent renowned for cheap and tackey £10 cases)...

This might do, the motherboard supposedly supports Raid5, you have the 3 disks needed for Raid 5, 1gb Ram, good PSU and a solid case. However I know next to nothing about servers so it might not be what you need at all. :)

Looks nice....im getting paid £500 to build this site and host it for a year....

Im gonna host it from home coz I got a 1.5mb upload and its not going to get too many hits.....

One dude said he'd do the job for £5k and they jus laughed at him so i felt a little oppertunity to make some cash....

Wanted to keep it on the cheap to maximise profit...

And my current web server is a Pentium 3 in serious need of replacing...so something like that sounds tastey...

FYI...my xact spec and costing...

Hmm

A little off topic, but coming from a web development background I can gurantee that a home server is no where near good enough for any business, just my opinion from personal experience, what about backups? remote backup? offsite backups? redudancy? ups? fire provention? 24/7 support? There is a reason why we use datacenter based servers :)

Tbh as long as you have a tidy whack of memory in there and a fairly decent CPU you will like the peformance, but your really choking the server by putting it on a 1.5mbs upload which in server terms is pretty small. Id just find a setup that your happy with for the budget, some of the ideas above are perfect.

I've pretty much said this to him before. Clearly one of the options from streamline.net (just off the top of my head) will more than suit his customers needs if he feels he could have met them on a comparativley crap home server that's primarily going to be used for NAS storage.

What can I Solaris..........meh ;)

Windows? IIS?

Whats wrong with a good old LAMP server, or even Solaris. PHP&MySQL are normally partnered with Apache.

£500? A tenth of that will buy you a year on a fast dedicated server. They will take care of the hardware, disks, physical backup, etc. It will have better uptime that you could manage at home and you won't have your ISP cutting you off for breaching their ToS (most ISPs include a clause in their home contracts forbidding you from hosting an enterprise server from your home; it's why they sell enterprise packages for a lot more money).

Why do you need a dedi server?

Could you not just buy some UK based hosting and use that? If you are hosting other peoples sites then buy a resellers account. But as mentioned above, a home line isnt going to do the job very well.
