Multitronic?!£

Whaaaaaaaat? I thought you wanted reliability
08 and later seem to be pretty decent as long as the oil is changed on schedule? I'd probably look at it differently if I was buying at 80-90k miles and the servicing hadn't been done to the letter, but it isn't and it has so fingers crossed!

As nice as the V60 is with the right spec, I fear you may be a bit late. OP has put a deposit down on a dagdag repmobile with a slushbox. :D

I've just put a deposit down on a 2011 A4 2.0 TDI Multitronic with HDD nav, cruise, sensors and sunroof. 26k miles, 12 month warranty and 24 month MOT cover. Going to see/fetch it on Saturday.

143 or 170 bhp?

I had this car with the 143 bhp engine and multitronic. That 'box doesn't help fuel economy at all. I averaged about the same fuel economy in that as I do in my 530d. And I wasn't constantly carrying a bootful of kids stuff at that time.

What are the servicing costs of a Multitronic like? I would imagine they could be high, plus the potential for large bills if anything goes wrong, as I'm guessing only Audi could easily fix it. I'm just mentioning this because you said low total cost of ownership.

I only had mine a year. I didn't like the box. I didn't think it suited the already slow engine anyway, and figured it must be, at least in part, a cause of the poor fuel economy. I swapped it out for a 177 quattro (B8.5) manual, which was even worse on fuel, despite supposedly being better on paper. My thinking was that if the economy was the same (the quattro eating as much fuel as the auto box) then I'd be reasonably happy (although still not overly happy with 40mpg out a 2.0 TDI). Turns out it was worse. Averaging around 36 mpg instead. Useless diesel engines is my experience of modern Audi's.

So can't really comment on reliability, as I only had it from around 20k to 35k. So wasn't even due it's first 'box service (if it even needs them).

No its not, its a term for a torque converter auto. The multitronic doesnt have a torque converter

Yeah that. Don't mind me. :p

Multitronic boxes have "software gears" though don't they..?

Whys that?
Tbf my experience with the D5 is good, but I do just commute 100 miles a day so its perfect for that.

Small development here. They phoned me today to get some more details for the free 5 day insurance. They ran through the details of the car... Audi A4 2.0 TDI Multitronic, registered Nov 2011, mileage 51k... Wait what? The website and the salesman said 26k. They checked the vehicle and it was in fact on 51k. That wasn't in itself a disaster, I would be fine with 51k miles, with a bit off the price for hassle etc, maybe some accessories thrown in. Asked them to confirm the Multitronic oil service at 38,000. It hasn't been done. Not that it was done late but STILL hasn't been done. Bearing in mind that Audi UK have wriggled out of the warranty for people who've had the gearbox oil changed 2000 miles late, this was obviously a complete non starter so asked for the deposit back. They said it was OK though because they would do the gearbox oil change today for free. I said that wasn't going to work for me because of the warranty issue.

At this point, I'd like to point out that this was an Approved Used Audi, found through the Audi website and was for sale at an Audi Dealership.

I said that I thought it was appalling that they were willing to sell an approved used Audi which didn't have a full service history. She then said that it did have a full service history that it was just the gearbox oil hadn't been done! I started to argue and then said, I don't know why I'm arguing about it because I'm not having the car. She is arranging to get my deposit back to me and asked if I wanted it to go back onto my card. I said yes and she said, if I could just email my card details to her, she'd get that sorted! After stopping laughing and then establishing she wasn't joking, I told her that I didn't think it was a good idea and that she could just send me a cheque.

Bit of a red herring. Never had an issue with Approved Used Audis myself but I guess you never know. Probably a genuine typo or mistake somewhere when doing the advert.

I was happy to go ahead if it was just the mileage typo, but the lack of gearbox oil change yet still claiming it as full service history I think is pretty outrageous considering how snarky they are when something goes wrong and you claim on the warranty.
