Hmmm. Could just block up the slot, then give her a copy of the key and ask her super nicely if she'll mind opening it and leaving it inside. Maybe get her some flowers each month to keep her sweet. That's what i'd do.

You could buy some permanent dye and post yourself some in a waterproof jiffy bag - once opened the thief will be literally RED HANDED, then catch him at the weekend.

Alternatively you could post yourself some kind of beacon device and keep the transmitter, maybe like a remote rape alarm or car key finder? Then go round all the rooms and listen through the doors while transmitting.

Hmm, saying that though, if it accidentally blows up the postman, I guess that might prove something of a deterrent to the thief and he will probably leave your letterbox well alone in future.

I used to do mail drops leaflets etc and loads of ppl used to put nails facing up in them that always got my hands bloody! do that sure made me look more carefuly in letterboxes!

Put metal seets into box so that it makes this shape > with a gap at the pointy end. Mail will go in and only if you open the entire box will you be able to get the > device out + mail. At least it's non lethal.
