Slightly over budget but could drop the cooler depending how much you want to OC.

You cant beat AMD with intel on a £400 budget tbh, not a snowballs chance in hell. My build with waynes mobo and cpu cooler if you can stretch that far over budget and if you absolutely cannot go a penny over £400 do as wayne suggests and wait for the gfx card.

And if you really want to talk to someone i have skype and dont mind but i am faaaaar from being an expert.

I'd just like to say I don't think anyone should get too caught up with who's build the person seeking a spec goes with . . . we are meaningless really and are just here to assist who-ever needs help in choosing the right specs . . .

I never expect anyone to fully go with every single item of hardware I suggest . . . although I always have a good reason behind each item I put forward! :p

  • Your original idea included a mobo missing a few tech features that Dan may have found useful in the future . . . just £5.00 difference . . . down the line that SATA 6Gb/s could be handy for a fast SSD . . . and USB3.0 too . . as you already said £5.00 seems good value for both these extra technologies . . .
  • Your original idea included DDR3-13333 cas 9 when just for £11.75 extra it could have been "low-profile" Corsair DDR3-1600 cas 9 . . . a 4GB set of DDR3 is a fairly long term investment and that small premium moves him up to the next speed grade . . . a little extra speed and a more versatile investment in the long run . . . I mentioned the "low-profile" bit not aimed at you but anyone else who perhaps choose a "high-profile" heatspreader kit costing a few pound less that could clash with the 3rd party HSF . . .
  • Your original idea included a 500GB 16MB cache HDD when for £13 extra you could have chosen a 1TB 32MB cache drive . . . yes he may not need more than 500GB right now and yes having 100% extra cache may not make a lot of difference but for the small premium involved I think its a better long term investment . . . and down the line say in 12 months Dan finally gets his wish and manages to get his SSD what happens to the HDD he already has? . . . that’s right it becomes a storage drive . . . 500GB or 1TB? . . . 100% extra storage for £13 . . .
The slightly better motherboard, memory, cooler and HDD all eat into the budget but none of them stop the build going ahead and none of them break the budget, it also gives him time to get the system sorted out and clocked proper so that when he finally gets the GPU it just gets dropped in and that’s it, frag, frag, frag!! . . . If he was to scrap all these enhancements and scrap his budget to get that GTX 460 768MB new he would end up with a worse system in a few months . . . its easier to make a GPU drop in value £££ than it is to grade-up your memory, hard-disk and motherboard that you already own!

Indeed, sorry if i come across giving the impression that i think my way is the only way because i agree with every point you make. I skimped a little on the ram, mobo and hdd because i cant imagine getting a PC without a dedicated GPU :), but like i said my perspective is that of a gamer.

Ultimately if i were Dan i would wait until i had £500 instead and get it all in one go and the build what essentially be what you have recommended + a gtx 460.

Thanks for all your help.

I have decided to get a pc more near christmas and sell my laptop.

is it worth an i5 for a bit extra buck or should i stick with quad core?.

Da

Ok i've now increased budget to £500 + Extra for a Gfx card (£100 -200)

Dont know if this complicates things but i need to get the best for my money so i dont have to upgrade everything for 1-3 years

Get posting :)

Thanks for the help though so far guys , i'm glad i joined this forum

I would have recommended a GTX 460 768MB version but their prices arent very good this week so have added in the 1GB Gigabyte model. Still I think an SSD would be more of a luxury at this stage. I know budget could be "upto" 700 but I think this will perform pretty well for around the £600 mark. A few very good offers this week I thought, the PSU is a bargain and also the PII 955 isnt bad. Case is your choice but I thought this is pretty good bang for buck, bottom mounted PSU too.

Ok m8, that budget is way more realistic for a decent PC and this is what i would do...

That comes to just a snip over £600 and will be a solid little PC, you will have no problems playing games or doing most anything else you wanna do on it. And if i understand your budget correctly you might have £100 left over which would get you a fairly decent SSD if you really must have one.

gantoris' spec, i would change the gpu to either a msi, gigabyte or asus as the palit are suppose to be loud, the HDD to an F3 and the case if for the OP to decide(not that theres anything wrong with ur case)..
to OP if you like the look of the case then no1 can argue about it since it will be you thats gonna look at it everyday :D

That HDD is on offer so seems like a deal, personally what im gonna do with my PC when i buy it is get a 1.5tb HDD and a 640gb sata3 HDD as a boot drive. Thats my poor mans SSD solution lol :) mainly cause i like the neatness of having a drive to install things on and a separate one to store image files and films ect. I hadn't heard about the Palit GPUs being loud, if thats indeed true then as Jony says there are plenty of nice 460 1gbs for around that price mark so no biggie. I dont know if this would appeal to you m8 but another thing to consider with the £100 wiggle room ive left for ya is a nice BluRay/DvD RW, theres a nice samsung one for £45ish but that all depends on if you care about watching blu rays on your PC.

Also depending on the gaming you wanna do and just how much you want your PC to pwn those games that £100 wiggle room could go into a nice radeon 5870 GPU or a GTX 470 like in Stulids build. The 1gb 460 is nice tho.
