Spec me a torch :-)

Fenix are a good quality light, bit pricey but they are a solid unit.

Oxide email sent bud. :)

As for expensive well seeing as mine is pretty much the brightest out there it's dirt cheap, the only other one is the lupine betty pro at around £600. ;)

The trout also has a 7 led but i prefer the liberator as it spills light underneath which is handy for anything that gets too close. :)

Also if you're after a cheap but good bike light then google magicshine, it's a p7 led but with a battery pack, goes for around £50.

When will people stop thinking Maglites are good torches... :(

They still are provided you use the led upgrade option that can be had, they'll kick out 500 lumens then and have a silly run time. ;)

Exactly, unless you want to use your torch as some sort of baton then they are large, cumbersome not particularly bright and quite frankly mince. A few guys at work carry about the 4d's and the light output on them compared to my fenix l2d is pathetic considering the size of them.

Much thanks to hux for his advice via email.

I have decided on the:
UltraFire WF-502B 3.7V~4.2V CREE XPG R5 WC LED 5-mode Flashlight (1*18650)
TrustFire Protected 18650 Lithium Battery (2500mAh 2-Pack Blue)
UltraFire 3.6/3.7V Battery Charger

which I think is a right result all in for around £26 :D

Just bear in mind the led lenser p7 doesn't actually have a p7 led that one has tripped a few people up. ;)

Just google ssc p7, should throw up enough results.

Are you talking about the MTE SSC P7 mentioned here;
http://www.mtbbritain.co.uk/mountain_bike_lights_review_led.html ?
I have the MTE SSC P7 which I use for mountain biking and it's very bright and well built but the batteries don't last very long at all. I just got back from a walk with it 30 mins ago and it only lasted about an hour on full power before it started flickering to the low setting. It's OK for me because I bought 2 batteries and when I go out mountain biking I take them both with me and simply change them when needed - it can be a little annoying but the power of the light when cycling through narrow woodland at night is well worth it.
IMO, it's a great torch if you're looking for or need a very bright light but for most people who want a general purpose torch this isn't a good choice because of the poor run time.

I bought my dad an LED Lenser Police Tech Focus torch for Christmas (£25 inc batteries and holster) which I think is absolutely perfect as a general purpose/emergency torch. It's made out of aircraft aluminium so it's extremely well made and light, the batteries last up to 50 hours and it takes 3 X AAA batteries so no power supply/charging is needed which is especially good for camping, etc. and it has a bright white light with a very good focus. I paid £25 and it came in a nice box with batteries and a case.
It's so good that I'm probably going to buy one myself now to use for walking, camping and for keeping in the car.

EDIT: I just read your post again and realised that you wanted a torch/light specifically for powercuts/blackouts. I agree with one of the posts above that you'd be better off getting a light specifically made for this use because I haven't heard of a torch being able to come on when it senses loss of power. Have a look around google and I'm sure you'll find something.
It sounds like you want something like this; http://www.safetlight.co.uk/

Not what you want but i can recommend the LED Lenser P7 200 lumens a lot of light from a small torch...could blind a badger at 50 yards.

Still waiting for my replacement Fenix L2D to turn up. I wanna see how good it is :(

Id be very interested to hear what you think of it when you get it, had my eye on that one for a while now. Pic would be brilliant too :)

Got a 4D LED Maglite and can honestly say its Crap, they were good in the 80's but a cheap plastic £2 torch from Tesco is better. Got myself a Inova T-4 rechargeable a couple of years ago and it is perfect for my needs. Also when it's on charge the chargers LED is bright enough for a night light.

I got one in July 2008. Loved it. :) Broke it. :D Not sure whether to get a LD20 for £48 or an LED Lenser Police Tech Focus Torch for £26.

It was quality. I'd probably say the LD20 is a better bet now being a more recent model. I can't back that up with words though as I've only owned the L2D. :)

If you want I could get some pics of mine tomorrow?

Version with and without pocket clip. Also pictured is my faulty LED Lenser V2 which is also a good torch, just a shame mine lasts less than an hour on a full charge.

Thanks.

If not, please mail to a1 @ blueyonder.co.uk

Wow, thanks for the response everyone! I quite like the look of the Joystick Maxx because it's on a stand and the Maxx D for the output. I will have a look on the provided links here too before I decide. Thanks again! :-)

[..] The main reason (please don't laugh guys) - I'm 31 years old and I'm still phobic of the dark lol! Thanks.

Does it have to be specifically a torch? If you just want portable lighting that runs off mains and automatically switches to a rechargeable battery when main power fails, you can get simple and cheap lanterns that use standard flourescent tubes. So they're about 2 feet long.

I have a couple of these:

That seems expensive - I'm almost sure I paid £15 each for mine.
