Spec me a turntable

If your planning on going full retro this should fit the bill The Rega Planar 78 :D

I've got to sort myself out a new turntable i have my heart / ears set on a Rega RP1

This years What HiFi awards:

Best Product: Rega RP3/Elys2 £550
Best turntable up to £400: Pro-Ject Essential II £200

The Rega RP1 is also an excellent budget alternative.

Second hand is always an option. I'll be selling my Linn Axis before I move abroad in a few months. It's near mint, fully boxed. If you're in no rush and it suits the as yet unspecified budget then it would give you a lot of bang for your buck.

In this condition, and this complete, including recent lid hinge replacement; about £300.

You could buy cheaper if you're not fussed about condition, packaging and having to pay for new lid hinges.

You say you don't have a budget Easy, a deck isn't the only thing to consider. Cartridge and phono stage are as well.......................so what's your total budget ?

Surely I could get decent results for 300? :o

Well, put it like this, my cartridge cost a lot more than £300.
Yes, you will get results for £300..............................If they are decent or not depends on all sorts of things. Not least, on how much you love Vinyl and how many records you have. Along with the question, do you intend adding to your Vinyl ?

I'd hazard a guess that SBT is a squeezebox touch.

You could go second hand to reduce the cost of the deck itself and spend more on the cartridge. But i'd agree that vinyl is a very expensive hobby, just a new stylus can easily cost over £100. (and that's the bit that wears out as you use it) I use an old 70's Thorens TD160 B with an SME 3009 tone arm. Being an ultra low mass arm means that it needed a high compliance cartridge hence why i have a shure M75ED with a new jico SAS stylus. You've then got the phono stage to consider too if your amp doesn't have one built in. (and people will tell you that built it ones are dreadful and will do your TT a disservice)

Do you mind me asking what cartridge you have as I could do with some suggestions myself and its impossible to audition these things nowadays.

To the OP, I have a dedicated vinyl set-up, so this may seem a strange thing for me to say but... If I lost all my LP's and had to start again I doubt I'd go into vinyl.

Although I don't own one myself, at recent shows I've been to I've been very impressed by modestly priced Digital setups, I think this medium has moved forwards in leaps and bounds over the years and if starting afresh this is where I'd start. Additionally, although you can get a lot of new and re-issued material on vinyl, you'll pay more for it. Get a portable hard drive and it won't take you long to get a ton of stuff of your mates...

SBT = Squeezebox Touch.

Get dBpoweamp rip all your CDs to lossless flac with it and stick the files on a Synology nas and stream the files to the SBT will give you high end sound for very little money.

To match that sound with a TT costs thousands.

if you just want something to have a play with and not spend much go for something like a used Technics DJ deck built like a tank and will sound decent enough within you budget.
