Spec me a turntable

The main issue with the Lp12 as far as sound quality goes is indeed set up.
Time spent ensuring the deck's suspension, cartridge alignment, tracking weight and vertical tracking angle are properly adjusted is an essential "component" that can make or break the Sondek.
This is something that I tackle myself, having upgraded my deck from Basik LVX/K9/Valhalla status to the dizzy heights of Ekos/Arkiv/Lingo.
An hour or so using a common sense, sensitive approach to set up pays huge dividends with the Lp12,and once done properly they'll hold their tune for years, constantly rewarding you with some of the best music you'll hear!
It celebrated it's 40th birthday last year......how many Hi Fi components can boast that!!
Probably the most noticeable difference for me between the Linn and a digital source is the fact I can listen to the Linn for hours......easily!!!Digital music soon becomes fatiguing to my ears,it always sounds just a little hard and soulless to me.

Cartridge alignment, tracking etc are of coarse critical on any deck not just the LP12.
Though these are not the key issues to get right on the old fruit box. It's starts with fundamentals of the top plate.
I also started with the same LVX/K18/Valhalla as an upgrade to my Axis.... my heights are a little more dizzy now ;) ..... the jump is performance is only matched by the jump in cost

Many slate the deck, often based on 20 year old experience having not heard what it can do now. But as you say, 40 years on it still does music, which has always been it's ethos since day one..... The only other product I can think of is a Porsche 911 that has followed the same type of path..... both iconic classics...shame I only own one of them :(

The Axis.......I've many a fond memory of mine,it cost me just short of a months wages at the time(lowly apprentice's rates....heh heh!).
I remember Dire Straits"Love over gold" being released about the same time.......aaahhhh happy days.
Interestingly enough,I also recall rushing out a couple of years later to buy one of the first Cd players(a Marantz),full of great expectation after being led by all the hype of "audio nirvana".
Twas one of the greatest let downs in my hi-fi history.

I was fortunate to helping out part time in a local dealers, so I got to here stuff.... I held off buying my first CD player until Linn brought out the single box Karik, was the first player I could actually sit and listen too. :p ... nearly 25 years later I still have it, tucked away in a cupboard resting :)

Any way more LP12 porn.... :D

Anyone here have spotify premium.... Is it worth a tenner a month...?

Cannot comment on Spotify premium myself, but I use Deezer Premium+, currently only £4.99 a month and it is brilliant. Up to up to 320kbps. Can even use it abroad which I recently did on a trip to Amsterdam. Just used the hotel wifi and streamed it through my tablet on a Bluetooth speaker setup I have for holidays (and the kitchen).

My CD collection is pretty much redundant now. Am even going to get a decent bluetooth receiver DAC and use it on my main hifi.

Porn indeed:D......your deck is identical to mine, bar the cartridge.
Nothing prettier than a fluted walnut plinth graced by an Ekos.........too much of that and you may very well go blind!!

Keel and Radikal as well ? ;)

I stripped the plinth down, varnish remover, sanded and then French polished it to get it back hopefully better than new
My original plinth was a black ash, I felt like a change :D

Perhaps not the Keel and Radikal bit,Cirkus and Lingo for me.......you lucky man!!!!
I bet that sounds fantastic,I've heard the Keel in action but not the Radikal and I can only imagine the two together must be exceptionally good.....the Keel itself was very impressive.
Your finishing skills must be very good,French polishing ain't easy and your plinth looks lovely,a nice depth of shine there and smooth as a baby's butt I bet!
Do you have the Urika tucked away under that plinth as well?

Oh forgot to mention the Urika ;) .... Radikal is a bigger improvement than the keel which is pretty good as you've heard. Next step Lyra Kleos :D
All makes the comparison to the KDS interesting ;)

Yeah I just got the RP1 myself. I bought the white belt separately and might choose a cartridge upgrade in a couple of months but the bias is pretty nice sounding. Even beats flac files for instrument separation and the rest of my hifi is mid to high budget so I was surprised this fitted in so well!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but this seemed more appropriate that starting a new one!

Who those of you with the Rega RP1 - can you recommend me an online retailer for it? There doesn't seem to be much choice and I want to make sure I buy from someone reputable!
The other option - a pro-ject, is available from a high street retailer. Am I better off buying off the high street rather than online? (as I read that the belts are likely to be an issue with entry level decks)
Thanks!

I'd always go with a specialist retailer for their advice and after service.

I got my Rega RP6 from Lintone Audio. Got lots of advice on the phone and delivery was prompt.

We have a Project RPM 1.3 genie which sounds pretty nice. Although, if the 300 budget is for other things, then, maybe the Essential is a better idea.

Bought my RP1 from Doug Brady Hi-Fi online

Would recommend finding a good hifi shop so you can have a chat about what your thinking of buying and have a good listen to a few setups but i didn't have the time to pop into Guildford so bought online after so many good reviews for the turntable
