Getting ready to start thinking about my 40th birthday approaching next year, and to give the wife an idea to buy me a 'proper' watch, rather than the £35 wonders I usually bother with.

Budget will be approx £3k. I don't have huge wrists so it can't look too big. Sort of style that I have seen and liked was the Breitling Chronomat Evolutions.

Anyone (Rotty?) able to suggest a few different watches around this price mark that come recommended?

Cheers

at £3k I would look no further than a Submariner/Seadweller

do you any prefernces re

bracelet or strap

normal or chronograph

dial colours and any other information you can give

also would suggest a Panerai , maybe a 111,104 or 210

The Sub and SD are 40mm which is considered standard these days ( most watches are getting bigger ) , the Panerais are 44/45mm though 40/42mm versions are available such as the 48 and 187

nothing at all wrong with Breitlings though a Navitimer/Bentley ( Bentley would be too big for you probably ) would be my choice though if you do go for one make sure you get a good discount as residuals aren't great on some models

Quick correction for Rotty (while i have the chance), tha PAM 187 is a 47mm model.

For £3K, i'd personally go for one of these:

an old Submariner (1680, 5513 or similar era )
Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean chronograph (black bezel, orange numerals)
Omega Speedmaster Broad arrow (white face, blue hands)
Panerai 111H or 112H

My wrists are 6.75", and can wear any of the above without it looking stupid. They range from 40mm to 45mm. IMO, it's small watches that look silly these days. I can't help but wince when i see a full grown man wearing a mid-sized Seamaster.

What about a nice IWC Aquatimer Automatic Chronograph or Classic Pilot.

Or get a Seamaster and a Speedmaster and some change to get a winder.

Cheers Rotty.

Chronograph for no particular reason other than I don't mind a busy dial. The navitimer you mentioned looks good to me, especially the A35350 black.

The Panerai's mentioned all look good, though don't really appeal to me. A bit too "plain" which I know others appreciate.

As to the extra info:

Bracelet would be preferred, though I don't mind a strap. Steel bracelet is fine, none of this gold rubbish.
Dial colour - Black is fine, though I'm not too fussy over it being blue/white/silver/ Not yellow or red though please.
I'm not sure why, but Rolex doesn't appeal to me. Maybe it's the number of fakes I constantly see that seems to de-value them in my eyes.

Thanks for the help

Classic Pilot is nice, though the Aquatimer looks a bit garish with the black and yellow face.

Thanks for the suggestions

Have a look at Rolex GMT Master II, my mate got one today and it looks stunning, even better in the flesh than on a website picture. Looks better than his Seamaster aswell.

Obvioulsy, not as nice as my Breitling Superocean !!

one slightly different Rolex suggestion , how about a Yachtmaster

or maybe a PAM 74 ( strap as standard but bracelets are available ) , this one is 40mm

the PAM52 is a 40mm chrono on a bracelet but may be a bit expensive, if you try a Panerai on you will fall for it immediately, pics don't do them justice

another suggestion , Zenith el primero chronograph , fantastic movement in these ( the older Rolex Daytona movements were based on this )

That Panerai pic you posted also has a Zenith El Primo in it. Fantastic movement. One of my favourites.

yep , thats why I suddenly remembered the standard el primero , loads cheaper than a Daytona or Panerai too

np i know nout about watches, just rember that one when i was looking about.

Hope u find something nice!

no worries there are many folks who ask over the odds for watches

most sports Rolex have waiting lists at authorised dealers but with a small amount of work fast delivery and even discounts are available

the standard SeaDweller has a 1 yr wait at the dealers ( and full RRP ) , I helped a forum member get one immediately and at around 10% discount, when it arrived the papers show it came from Ernest Jones

At the risk of hijacking the thread whats a good watch for the 100-200 quid price bracket? I could do with a nice day to day watch but I can't justify more than 200. I just KNOW i'll smack a brick wall or something lol.

Again, apologies to the OP - thought it would be better to ask here rather than start a new thread :)
