Hi,

Looking to go AC and upgrade my Asus RT-56U router. I've got a top budget of £150 ish. Any suggestions please?

Thanks :)

Ubiquiti UniFi Lite AP

:)

e; Good luck on getting one though. Still waiting on a shipment which should have been with me weeks ago :(

In stock at a non-competitor - are we allowed to mentioned other suppliers?

If you're talking at a certain company I'd forgone from mentioning them ;) :D

They quoted a longer lead time and I'd probably have them already if I used them :(

e; Also I'm well aware it's not a router - it's simply an access point but it's enterprise grade so you can have separate SSID for Guest etc, the router OP has is a great one and seems pointless spending such money.

maybe not as I ordered and got them delivered from broadbandbuyer (next day delivery).

Ahh yes, and them :( We used a local supplier who used to have a branch here, not my contact :p Although can vouch for what you said as use them for other bits

Not much cop in the routing department :)

I have this - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/tp-l...ireless-cable-router-archer-c7-nw-112-tp.html.

Have had no issues at all with it.

Other options that would all be an improvement

White and better 2.4Ghz speed - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/tp-l...-band-gigabit-router-archer-c9-nw-142-tp.html

Cheaper and slightly slower than the one I have - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/tp-l...cable-router-4-ports-archer-c5-nw-113-tp.html

Cheaper White - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/tp-l...-band-gigabit-router-archer-c8-nw-138-tp.html

Headline speeds!!! - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/tp-l...nd-gigabit-router-archer-c2600-nw-185-tp.html

If OP simply wants AC ability, no point buying a new router when he's got one setup currently.

Guys, I play a lot of online games if that's any help. I've had my eye on the ASUS RT-AC87U AC2400 - not sure what people think of it? My current router seem's to be dropping my speeds and only a reboot seem's to sort it. Tried different channels etc but I'm thinking it's the router wifi giving up the ghost?

Couple of things, the router will reduce speed if the connection conditions warrant it, that's what it's supposed to do - it'll prefer a reliable connection over a higher speed connection. Do a survey and see where gets a decent signal in the house and where doesn't. If you want to improve the connection either invest in better wifi dongle/card for the PC/laptop with a decent external antennae or move one or the other to improve the signal. You could also increase the transmit power slightly at the router side. Also gaming by wifi is generally not ideal, it adds latency - is it not possible to hard wire?

Hi mate

Thanks for the advice. I tend to notice when I run a speedtest(.net) it sometimes only shows me at 90-100mb yet other times I get 150mb (I'm on virgin 150mb now) so it's normal that it's throttling the speed? My latency in games seems perfectly okay and no lag issues but when I'm downloading my rate is all over the place on wifi. An example being around 10mbbs rate on steam and origin yet hard wired it's 18-19mbps. I'm using a WN22 tp link USB dongle. I have explorered the idea of hardwiring in a cable that I could run around the skirting board as another option.

Speedtest.net can give varied results depending on what server you use, if it's peak time (VM have congestion issues in some area's) and a whole load of other things. It's more of an indication rather than a definitive diagnosis of an issue and you always benchmark via wired rather than wireless as it removes another variable. As bledd will no doubt have tattooed on some unspeakable part of his body RJ45 > Wifi.

I couldn't find a WN22, but the WN722 is a wireless N device rated to 150mbit, it's not AC and i'd not expect to get full speed from it, if that's what you've got on the PC i'd suggest getting something that supports AC1200 or higher with a decent external antennae.

I just ordered the AC87U for £117 (Yes new in case anyone asks). It's a sidegrade from my AC66U which I will can utilize as an AP. I did want the new Billion routers but not at £250.

That's a very competitive price, best I could find was £128.99, but you've not side graded, the AC87 is a dual core 1Ghz ARM based CPU, the AC66U is single core 600mhz mips, the difference will be considerable if for example you want to run a secure VPN AP instance for example.

Just had another £10 knocked off the price as there was a bigthanks promo running, so I got onto chat support and they refunded back a tenner. Happy Days! :D

That large Rain Forrest place, they've altered the pricing since then but that voucher may be of use on something else so thanks for the tip as i'd not spotted it on twitter :)

Just replying to say I've just been onto them and got it for £116.99 delivered. They didn't even quibble! Looking forward to receiving it. :D
