I love playing RTS and Turn based strategygames of all kinds sci-fi, war, classical themes. To date I have played and enjoyed the following:

Rome total
C&C (decade pack)
Starcraft
DOW I +II + all expansions
Civ 4 and 5
World In conflict
Supreme Commander (still playing)
Genesis Rising
Medieval total
Star Wars empire at war (wasn't that impressed with this)

My favourites were definately the civ series and DoW, but DoW II was a bit disapointing as there was no base building involved :(

I want to try some other titles but not sure which ones are really going to be worth getting. Also Iam sure there are some real classics out there that I have not tried or heard of.

I remember someone telling me about homeworld and another ame called alpha centauri ? But haven't found them anywhere (are these quite old titles ?).

Any suggestions on where to go next in the strategy gaming genre ?

Starcraft....2? :D

Alpha Centauri is old, but i imagine there are still copies floating around. You might find it in a 'Sold Out' range for a fiver or something..

Gal Civ 2 or Sins of a solar empire.

You could try King Arthur too but I'm not sure you would like the fantasy aspect and RPG elements. I fricking love it though.

If you do get a chance, play Homeworld. Beg, borrow, kill for a copy. Anything! Then you can start posting causal scathing statements about developers not making games like they used too. :D
Hearts of Iron/Europa Universalis.

See you in 12-18 months.

By then he'll have just worked out the basics. :D

The hardcore Paradox games are something else.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Company of Heroes? Its not "that" in depth but is still a great RTS to get into!

Keep meaning to have a go at it myself,i've had a boxed copy kicking around for years.Got put off by the rumoured huge amount of patching you need to do before playing.

Was going to mention Company of Heroes. I practically giggled the first time I saw artillery fire creating cover zones for my rangers to leap into. :D

Plenty of old 4X games too that are great. OP should look into Civ.

You will enjoy company of heroes if you liked Dow ii. Very different theme but se similar mechanics.
For Rome tw look for the Europa barborium mod- it is excellent, and is truly a totally diferent game. It is extremely well researched, the are a lot of interesting and unique units. It also introduces regional recruitment, e.g you can only recruit Iberian units in Spain etc which makes the strategy much more interesting.
For medieval tw ii look for the broken crescent mod - shifts everything to a middle east focus. Great mod, much more challenging than vanilla.

Hmm... In depth strategy deffinately brings to mind paradox games. They are probably the best strategy games out their. I would personally reccomend Europa universalis iii and crusader kings. All their games are fairly complex and you will probably need to check out the paradox forums when you start out for advice.
