Was looking at Avermedia Live Gamer with its pretty big red button, but unbelievably it forces your resolution to a max of 1920x1080 which makes my monitor (1920x1200) look all fuzzy and out of focus. Bummer

So down the software route it is. Any recommendations? Lots of people seem to have a love or hate relationship with fraps, so what you using and do you recommend it?

Heard the same about fraps, but I've also heard you can get pretty good results if it is set up correctly.

Also - Msi Afterburner seems to be a popular choice. :)

Never had an issue with fraps really. It hogs the system a bit but it's output is the most universally viable to be honest, so I'd recommend trying it first then going looking for alternatives if it's just not running smooth for you. Afterburner is decent and there's one called Doxy (or something similar) kicking about. XSplit also has a local record mode, which might be of interest since it can record from skype too.

Going to sound like a jerk but if you're planning on recording, most authoring systems use HD 720 and HD 1080 so having a monitor which displays those well is by far the easiest longterm solution. I ended up getting a 16:9 monitor instead of the 16:10 one I had because I always record in those and it's just made life easier all round for me, no more messing about.

are you thinking of Dxtory?

personally i'd try MSI afterburner for video recordings because to get anything longer than 30s per video in fraps you have to pay whereas MSI afterburner is free. also, afterburner probably has more formats than the free version to choose from (definitely true for screenshots)

you might need a beta version to do audio recording though
