Ok so i want some Anime, theirs lots of differant arts to choose from so im nto really sure what to get, i prefer Anime to Manga (Ghost in a shell stuff).

i really enjoyed Spirited away and Howls moving castle so i like artwork, looking into getting The castle of cagilostro as it looks like the type of film i enjoy but i want an action film as well as i have not seen many of them. apart from the obvious ghost in a shell which i thought was ok.

also just not (i dont enjoy stuff like Dragonball Z) pure gore and or great artwork/storyline is what im after.

Full Metal Alchemist, Guyver, Ninja Scroll, Samurai Champloo, Hellsing and Spriggen are some of my faves.

Also Patlabor, Appleseed, Wings of Honneamise

Appleseed, appleseed exmachina are absoloutly breath taking, there are moments during exmachina that briareose looks like a live action actor but i know better lol!
Theres also a movie cooming out sometime in the year called vexille, i havnt seen it but it seems to be getting good reviews.
Also if you havnt seen it the final fantasy advent children is quite good aswell.

Maybe worth giving Karas parts 1+2 a go they have some stunning art work and some nice over the top action scenes, they also get pretty bloody in places.

You should take a look at http://www.anime-planet.com/anirec/ when your looking for something new to watch they have an excellent recommendation database. (It's a little unstable though as their moving to new servers atm)

More votes for Patlabor, Appleseed and Spriggan.

Nearly all of the Studio Ghibli movies are excellent. My favourites are Laputa-The Flying Island and Princess Mononoke.

i know sweet fa about anime - i've only caught a few ghibli movies on tv.... but i'd recommend nausicaa of the valley of the wind. by far the best i've seen. :)

It sounds like you would prefer movies to series so I also recommend:

Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Grave of the Fireflies
The 2nd Ghost in the Shell film (Innocence)
Memories (it's actually 3 shorter films in one)
Tokyo Godfathers
Vampire Hunter D
Akira

I'd say keep working your way through the Studio Ghibli films, they're all ace. :)

Also, storywise, I'd recommend Full Metal Alchemist and Gungrave. The former gets a bit silly/stereotypical anime at points, but it still has great moments, and the latter is just masterful. Such a brilliantly told, poignant story.

One thing I'd would say regarding the Studio Ghibli stuff is that, whilst most of them are quite good, a few of them are a bit week, (Only Yesterday), and Grave of the Fireflies is extremely depressing.

Another film which may be worth a look is Paprika and Perfect Blue is quite good from a psychological thriller point of view.

I tend to err towards series over films though .... :)

Last Exile

I would second that, especially for the art and music.

My personal recomendations based on a combination of what is readily available (and preferably relatively cheap;)), and what the op has said would be

GITS: SAC - you can pick up both season sets for about £25 each if you have a look round. Although that may be a bit long.

Macross Plus - it's got transforming robot fighters and a great soundtrack (not to mention some nice visuals and a fairly good story) - last I saw you could get he pack with both the OVA version, and the Movie version for about £8 (the movie is basically the OVA's edited together with some bits cut out, and a couple of very short new bits).
It's got a Yoko Kanno soundtrack which is always a big plus:p

Memories as already mentioned

Place Promise in our early days / Voices of a Distant Star - both by the same director (Voices is great, and was done almost entirely as a one man effort).

Patlabor is, as has already been mentioned very good - i think the first two films are available cheap as well, although they can take their time to get to the action (and to get the most out of them you really want to watch at least some of the TV series - the films stand on their own ok, but you don't get the background for the characters).

Haibane Renmei is a great story/art driven anime, although it's got a very gentle pace to it (not much action at all), it's all about the characters and them coming to terms with things..
I was lucky enough to get the R1 artbox which in a way sums up the series - most of the other artboxes on my shelves are bright with a lot of action/characters on them, the Haibane one is looks a bit like an old fashioned book in the colour (sort of faded leather/paper) and front with just the name, logo and slight decorative bits in the corners..
