ok, so i've been going through a spate of atmospheric shooters recently, started with a moment of boredom deciding to give metro a proper go (i'm not good with jump scares/paranormal ****) and really enjoyed those, then move on to the bioshock franchise and really loved the whole morality gone wrong storylines.

however having just done all 3 bioshocks+dlc i'm finding myself hungry for a new world. something similar in terms of good old fashioned killing everything you see (or at least have that an option for when i inevitably fail at stealth) and an interesting storyline. can be gritty and realistic or wacky and dystopian as long as it's interesting.

so any suggestions?

edit: doesn't have to be shooters, just as long as there are sufficient levels of badassery to the main character.

F.E.A.R. (also Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate)
F.E.A.R. 2 & 3
Hard Reset
Bulletstorm
System Shock 2 with mods
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (a ton of mods out there for the series) - very atmospheric
Thief games
Shadow Warrior games

Doom is very atmospheric in the sense everything is death, the music is great and if you really want a treat play it on the hardest difficulty!

good shout but already gone through those.

might give stalker a go, given it's got the whole bleak russian post-nuclear thing going.

hmm, thought occurrs maybe i should finally give fallout an actual chance (started on 3 and hated the whole not being able to shoot **** level mechanic)

Try Fallout 4.

You will still die if you go to the wrong places, but the initial difficulty is easier than Fallout 3.

I quite enjoyed Fallout 3 where killing one zombie needed 20 headshots from my Pea shooter rifle that takes 30 seconds to reload :D

Fallout 4 gives you better stuff early on (or I was just crap at Fallout 3)

i'm giving 3 another go, but paid better attention to the character building at the start so i can actually shoot mostly in a straight line.

atm my biggest issue is medpacks, just keep getting horribly injured and going through them like nobodys business.

Both metros are exactly what you're after .

both metros is what started this whole chain, although definately on the upper end of my tolerance for ghostly shenanigans.

Probably just me, but I loved the world setting (which I guess can be atmosphere) of Borderlands 2

Resident Evil 7, I didn't find it particularly 'scary' so you might get on with it. It's a cracking, atmospheric game ... not masses of shooting mind.

Once you hit a certain level in Fallout 3 you will be basically invincible, but the initial going is tough. Just do a few of the quests around the Megaton area until you've leveled a bit and you should be fine.
