spec me some atmospheric, plot driven shooters!

Probably just me, but I loved the world setting (which I guess can be atmosphere) of Borderlands 2

i totally agree, i have so many hours on the borderlands series, can't wait for 3

If u don't mind 3rd person. Spec ops the line

man that game is weird, played through it on playstation and it was strange

Once you hit a certain level in Fallout 3 you will be basically invincible, but the initial going is tough. Just do a few of the quests around the Megaton area until you've leveled a bit and you should be fine.

yeah, i went back there after doing the museum mission (and getting nearly owned by the sheer volume of supermutants out front) and defused the bomb then did a few missions for the shopkeeper which seems to have me in a bit better stead. figuring out the whole weapon repair thing helped too.

When i first started playing i rushed to get to DC aswell. It really is infested with the things and they're tough as hell when you're low level.

Are you running any mods? They really improve the game with little things such as sprinting and iron sights.
There is a great guide on the STEP forums that really makes the game the way it should have been. It can be hard to setup mods correctly for Fallout 3 (and New Vegas) but is well worth the effort.

not running any mods, although both sprinting and iron sights do sound nice.

generally i avoid running mods on a first playthrough- to get the true experience of what the creators wanted.

is there anything that lets you assign a seperate button to melee? ie so you can do a melee hit with say mmb without switching weapons

Stalker COP with any of the latest total overhaul mods. Adds some great atmospheric weather and effects and turns it into an outright horror game.

Usually i would agree about a vanilla run through first, but Fallout 3 feels so dated that mods are essential in my opinion. I couldn't play vanilla when i finally got round to starting the game so found the mod guide i mentioned before and worked through it slowly.

Just read everything carefully if you decide to use it and don't be daunted by the seeming complexity of the guide. Once you get comfortable with the tools it is fairly easy.

Not sure about separate melee hits since it's been a while since i played but it may be possible with one of the mods in the pack.

it's definately on my limit for "dated but playable", it's not like trying to play morrowind with it's render distance of 20 feet :D it's definately aged well given it still looks decent enough today.

i'll definately check that list out, fortunately looks like it's the standard utilities that skyrim/oblivion uses so should be ok there.

i'll maybe look at ads, sprinting and just texture mods, don't want to go adding mega loot first playthrough.

Resident Evil 7, I didn't find it particularly 'scary' so you might get on with it. It's a cracking, atmospheric game ... not masses of shooting mind.

I completed it a couple of nights ago. Very impressed. The atmosphere was superb. Recommended, op.

i'm not good with jump scares/paranormal

F.E.A.R. (also Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate)
F.E.A.R. 2 & 3

I'd avoid FEAR if you don't like jump scares / paranormal. FEAR does have a demo though, which includes probably the most memorable jump scare of any FPS I've played, so if you get on with the demo then probably be OK.

Shooters:
-DOOM (the new one)
-Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered (in fact most of the CoD series have good atmosphere)
-Max Payne
-Unreal
-Singularity (quite akin to Bioshock)
-System Shock 2 (although graphics let it down a bit)
-STALKER
-Medal of Honour (I'll probably get slated for this, but it has a couple of great set pieces)
-Spec Ops: The Line
-Fallout 3

Non-shooters:
-Mass Effect 2
-Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
-Deus Ex series
-Mafia

If I had to pick games closest to Metros and Bioshocks I'd say Singularity, DOOM and Deus Ex although the latter is slightly more biased towards RPG elements.

Alien Isolation (Scary 8/10. Avoid playing this one alone with lights off.)
Doom (2016) (Scary 4/10)
Fallout 3/NV/4 (not scary)
Metro 2033, Metro Last Light (These are frickin great) (Scary 3/10)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series (Not very scary)
Shadow Warrior 2 (Not Scary)
F.E.A.R. series (Scary 7/10)

All are atmospheric. Alien Isolation is terrifying and panic causing. But it's phenomenal.

I didn't find the new Doom atmospheric in the slightest. Doom 3 on the other hand had a ton of atmosphere. The new doom was just a series of arenas, joined to together with copy pasted corridors and the odd body part here and there to try and make it look scarier.

STALKER.
Half Life.
Bulletstorm.
Crysis 1.

The Fallout games and anything Elder Scrolls just didn't grip me. Too much exploring, story and gathering /crafting and not enough shootybang. I need action or tension.

Half Life 2 gets my vote.

It's an old game but still one of the best on PC. The Ravenholm level will freak you out in places.

DOOM 3 would get a mention from me.

Not quite as stellar compared to DOOM 2016, however a very decent game in its own right and very atmospheric.
