The Hunt for Red October is the one Tom Clancy film that I'd say was superior on the big screen. Just a personal thing though.
The other adaptations of his novels completely miss the mark though.

2001: A Space Odyssey By A.C.Clarke. The book is better than the film, but what makes the film so good is A.Clarke collaborated with Stanley Kubrick on the screenplay.
This doesn't really count, TBH. The film was based on a screenplay based on a very short story that is nothing lie the film.
The novel was written afterwards.

Brilliant book.
I knew I wasn't awake enough the other day - otherwise I wouldn't have missed out:
The Godfather - Mario Puzo: an unforgivable omission on my part really.
Rum Punch - Elmore Leonard (filmed by Tarantino as Jackie Brown): supposedly very good but I haven't got round to reading it yet.
Carlito's Way - Edwin Torres: another great gangster book.
If you want to be a bit sly then of course you could pick almost any of the classics (Shakespeare, Dickens, Dumas etc etc etc) as most have had films made about them.

and another vote for I am Legend film should not have been named after the book as they are completely separate things only the name is the same really, the book is amazing, short too, which is always a bonus.
