2 of my kids have taken some sort of interest in WW2 since I started playing Memoir 44 (they play with me sometimes). Specifically looking for docs that cover the start of the war and why it started, normandy invasions and general France battles and possibly covering the Auschwitz. One of my kids started to watch Band of Brothers with me and he liked it, plus he can separate reality and acting.

I have Netflix, Amazon and Disney if that helps, plus I am sure I can source elsewhere.

See if you can source World at War, the documentary series from around the 70s. A truly epic series that covers all aspects of WW2 and has interviews with people on all sides of the conflict
This is the way.

Without a doubt one of the most amazing documentary series ever produced. Not uncommon to find it cheaply on Amazon. I also think it is now freely available online but can't remember where Google may help. It's on Archive.org but I also think that ITV had a website with free download too.

I have heard of that. Is it the one that has been remastered/cleaned up?

edit: Dont think it is but I have found it on archive.org. Downloading now. Thats my week sorted with the kids or without.

This is an excellent series. DVD Boxset available on Amazon (at least that's where I bought it from). Interesting is that it portrays the official version of how the allies spotted ships, got intelligence etc as Engima breaking was still under the National Secrets Act. Nothing wrong with what it describes about the conflict and events, it just leaves out that the plane that spotted the African relief convoy leaving Italy was specifically sent there to look because back in Blighty someone had read the shipping plan that the Germans and Italians had messaged their Naval High Command (etc etc)

If they get into this sort of history then Ken Burns "The American Civil War" is also well worth a watch

I thought this was fascinating. I never heard of the Cassino incident prior to this. I think it's more US centred though.

Couple of episodes into WW2. Quite harrowing really, the rise of Hitler. Just waltzing into Austria, Czechoslovakia (with minimal resistance) etc. Also, TIL, we did **** all to help Poland after promising them our full support. I know a fair bit about WW2, never had it as a subject at school though. This is educational. 10/10

YouTube channel called “World War 2” do lots of different videos including a week by week.

Been very good, in depth yet not droll or dull. Fully recommend

Mark Felton Productions YouTube channel is good and has some lesser known war stories:

Something I really like is Al Murray (he of pub landlord fame) and James Holland (historian) walking the ground to see the evidence there and give understanding into the geography etc.

Well worth a watch and you get typical Al Murray humour and voices etc at times.
Two series exist so far, normandy and market garden

Auschwitz: The Nazis and 'The Final Solution' is a six-episode BBC documentary film series presenting the story of the Auschwitz concentration camp from its early operations in 1940 to the prosecution of German Nazis involved in the operation of the camp. It combines interviews with former inmates and guards with authentic reenactments of relevant events.

A quite brutal but very gripping series. Well worth a watch IMO.

Absolutely loads on Netflix including WW2 in colour and greatest moments of WW2 in colour. Lots of Nazi stuff on there too but some of it a bit grim for kids.
I just finished the new Winston Churchill doc on there and really liked it.

A couple of ones that haven't been mentioned, I thought this https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Nazis:_A_Warning_from_History was a really interesting series, explores a bit through interviews some of the logic, decisions and feelings that made Germany into what it was in 1933-1945. It's an interesting insight into the start of the war as well.

And although it's kind of the opposite of what you said, The Last Days of WW2 is a really detailed look at some of the events really close to the end of the war that are easily forgotten / glossed over in favour of the big events.

Battlefield is interesting as well - it has some deep dives on some specific key battles of the war, though little about the context around them.

Is that the series that goes into detail on Sleicher and how he thought he could control Hitler and exploit his popularity?
