Finally looking at moving on from my first car after 7 great years. It might only be a 93 Sunny SR, but it has been quite a wonderful motoring experience that has cost absolute peanuts, literally. But the time has come to move on and am looking to buy in Jan as my insurance runs out then.

I work down in London (train commute every day) and have a Mrs down here / St Albans in the New Year (train ticket will cover that), so I'm not looking for '£20k sports car with 50mpg, 7 seats, sub 6 0-60' ;)

I'm looking for something fun to do 3-5k miles in over the year and especially some track days considering I live less than 10mins from Bedford. Now comes a list of considerations (in order of preference) and would like some opinions (typical OcUK expected:)) and experiences, especially from the Teg owners. Budget isn't fixed but would look up to £10k, although I would ideally like to pay less and spend more on modifications if necessary. But be aware that my list is quite varied and I really need to get some test drives to get an idea of what gets my juices going.

FYI: 24, 7yrs no claims, good postcode and garaged etc.

1. ITR DC2
Have always wanted a Teg and it is heading the pack at the moment. They are priced well, relatively cheap to insure and tax, plus still maintain some practicality with 4 seats and a boot bigger than a shoe box. Plus it won't be a bonkers step up from the sunny compared to some of the others on the list.

2. TVR Griff 500
Yes yes, totally bonkers choice, but this is very much a heart decision with brain totally ignored. Would love the power of a 500 and a V8 would obviously be very special. But then again this would involve a lot more time, effort and maintenance which I cannot guarantee to give.

3.) Evo 7
Gaijins purchase initially set off my craving for a new car and I have always loved the 7. It is a 'weapon' of a saloon, but I'm just not sure it's me. Can't think of much else to say about it really, either negative or positive.

4.) Clio 197
Supposed to be great and one of the contractors at work loved the test drive he had the other week and is considering one as a 2nd car for the Mrs (he has an exige for day to day / track). But for me it's a little common, is still a clio, has a horrible interior in my eyes. Plus I'm ready to move up from a small hatchback.

5.) Insert others I haven't even considered

6. Completely lose my marbles in the new year
Get a loan for 1/2 the amount and buy a Noble M12 GTO............. Very unlikely, but never say never :p

£10K car for low miles and with real track potential suggests Elise to me. Boxster S would also be a consideration. I don't know much about Tegs and Clios and I hear very good things, but I'd personally want RWD.

Would I even fit in an elise (6ft 2)? :p

The only thing against it is that I do want a little bit of practicality (ok I'm contradicting myself a little considering some of my choies above:p), but do see the elise as a gutless little go kart............... But hey that could change if I drive one, but first fit in it.

Never consider a boxter, but for this price range am I looking 986 or 987? A good friend has recently bought a 987 and he's taking me for a drive in it next week come to think of it!

Argh, was waiting for the mx-5 to appear, PH is full of mx-5 love. Only briefly drove the latest one at the motorshow last year but sjut not sure I could ever bring myself to own one. I'm a picky sod and it is still just too girly for me :( Shallow = yes :(

don't buy a noble without a big reserve fund. speaking from experience here!

in a similar vain, TVR may not be the best choice, but as you say, a choice from the heart!

Typical OCUK reply GO :p

Buy a 6 speed Corvette, a C4 Gen one. Should get a very nice one for 6-8k and that'll outperform lots of the stuff listed and then you've got a big chunk of change left to soup it up even further!

It also won't break lots, cost a fortune to service, or drink an idiotic amount of fuel. Plus it stands out just a teeny-eeny bit more than the others :p You get all the modern bits too like cruise/climate/electric everything so won't have to compromise there.

Make yourself a serious, serious weapon with one of those, whilst still having something you can use daily without having to think about it.

One like this:

Except without the 'dealer' price tag :D It is a nice example (but not my preferred colour or wheels), mind....and these things don't depreciate if looked after, usually the opposite.

For sale is my much loved 1989 C4,Red leather interior, she has covered 43000 miles and comes well documented with a large history folder dating back to 1995 with invoices for work and parts fitted over a period of time inexcess of £14000. She is still a numbers matching car-engine,gearbox,rear axle. From new she was fitted with all options for that year i,e 6 speed manual gearbox,Z51 performance handling package,FX3 electronic ride & handling,FE7 heavy duty suspension,J55 heavy duty brakes,6 way power drivers & passenger sports seats, clear and colour coded roof panels, electric windows, mirrors etc etc etc.
She was once owned by a corvette restorer who made sure she was how she was meant to be i.e trim, screws, clips and correct wheels for year, The engine was sent away to jeals (corvette ZR1 specialist) and peter knight (race engine builder) as the engine had very low oil pressure, It was bored +30 and rebuilt using GM parts (new crank, shells, bearings etc) it was also uprated using - Crane cams,Gold race rollers,TPS throttle body,TPS stage 2 chip,Edelbrok intake manifold,Edelbrok performer heads,Edelbrok cam covers,hi po coil,LT1 shorty headers and full stainless exhaust (loud). 325hp/350ft.lb (factory 245hp) with upto date dyno sheet. I do still have the original heads, inlet, manifolds, cam in the loft.
The wheels have been reconditioned and tyres are 90% still good.
She is m.o.ted untill next june and taxed untill end on november this year.
The air con needs regasing and the cruise doesnt work (never needed it as I like to drive) and there are some small slight scratches and the odd stone chip but for the year inside and out she is one of the best around.

....and as some example of scale, a Corvette is 60cm longer than a Griffith, but 14cm narrower and slightly lower :) In fact it's pretty much the same size as an Evo 7 but obviously a lot lower profile :)

What sort of MPG does the Teg DC2 give?

Mine since May

Total Spend
£1,477.84

Total Miles
8593

Total Litres
1312.41

Average MPG
29.76

Pounds per mile AVG
0.17

Average miles per 40L
261.90

Average miles per litre
6.55

Nah, in daily driving even my automatic LT1 would average 20mpg solely bouncing around town. On the motorway it'd be ticking along at 1800RPM at 70mph and do about 30-32mpg - so on average it was about 25mpg. I did a few hundred miles of mixed driving once and average 27.6, although my cruising speed was only about 65.

I'd expect the manual to be better - but I've only had a manual L98 (earlier engine) and those are less fuel efficient than the LT1 (and less powerful). I seem to remember the 6 speed LT1s average about 26-28 to the gallon. Got to get a good one, though :)

Decat and a few other tweaks frees up a few miles to the gallon extra too...

I'm gona say DC5 integra, could get a nice one for 10k with a few mods.

Big boot with folding seats even with enough space for a drum kit if your put those tetris skills to work

I've just bought one myself a few weeks ago and its epic fun and still returns 35mpg on the normal work run even with some VTEC action!

Was dreading Lashout coming here, so much so that I was already on PH looking at some C5s. I thought they would be around the same price as these C4s

Not really a fan tbh, look very 80s and have the wheel on the wrong side :(

DC5 is a good bet and something I forgot to include on the list, but they are imports so there is always risk there, plus I could get a sorted DC2 for much less and still have enough for a complete overhaul of the brakes with Dixcel discs and pads all around.
