hi,

hope you can help, mate needs a system for one of his lads at uni doing 3d rendering.

spec as cheap as possible, as usual wants best bang for buck, been told that the gfx card/setup must be dx10 compatible.

cheers.

How's this work for you?

He can change it depending on the needs of his program, i.e. adding more RAM or removing HDD space. The GPU might be overkill for what he needs, perhaps a 2600 would be more appropriate. Either way the quad is the way to go, especially if you overclock its nads off.

beefy gfx card could be changed if its a bit overkill (depends on his monitor etc etc) , quad core, 4 gig. plenty of hdd space. if he wants cheaper can change the case

not really looking to overclock it as its going to be his working machine and he hasnt over clocked before.

Also is a high end card needed for rendering thought an NV8500 or ATI2600 would do the job ?

from my spec. C2Q will help for multitasking/rendering, 4 gig - cant see the need for more than 4 gig atm. plenty of storage on the 500gig drive.

There is no need for an 8800gts for what he wants. The 2600 would be perfectable fit for task, what monitor is being used? Also if your not overclocking and trying to keep the price down, there is no need for a new cooler, the stock will be capable. What OS is getting used, if Vista consider getting 4GB of ram, otherwise 2GB will suffice.

First of all, what 3d software is he using and is it 32 bit or 64 bit version of the software.
If you could list what software he is using i may be able to help.
P.S. im currently building my own system for 3d/image and video editing work.

cheers for the info so far.

i will try and get info on what software hes going to be using, o/s hasnt been decided yet, neither has the screen.

system is going to be a uni setup, mainly to do rendering on, with watching dvds etc .

How's this then?:

I just removed some of the fat since it won't be overclocked. The Antec case and PSU should be more than enough with mid-range graphics. I made sure to get the GPU with GDDR3 rather than GDDR2. It should make a pretty big difference in performance.
