SPECTRE Bond24 discussion [Please use spoiler tags when discussing the plot]

It sounds like a run of the mill dreary Sam Smith ballad that a talented orchestrator has tried there best to turn into a bond theme. The instrumental refrain at the start that comes back after each chorus is beautifully done and musically interesting. The rest is dull.

:( its growing on me, but i think its just the theme in the background which feels very bondy. ...

I just cant stand the pitch changes in voice,

I just cant stand the pitch changes in voice,

There is a Youtube version of it being sung by a woman accompanied by just a piano and it sounds loads better.

However, it is still a weak song as it just doesn't build to anything.

As soon as they said Sam Smith was singing, I knew what it would be like. :( Dreary, high pitched, warbling nonsense.

Everyone at work hated it.

There are elements of the music that aren't too bad. I'm sure I heard 'The World is Not Enough' in this string section though.

I think this is the main problem - falsetto aside - it just doesn't take-off, though it sounds like it wants too; where it needs power, it goes whiny. However, there is some good stuff within and it does 'ear worm' itself into your brain... having given it half dozen listens, or so.

It is certainly not the worst Bond title track, by a long way.. hello Madge.

Edit: I really wish the Radiohead rumor had been true.. now that would have been interesting!

There is a good tune underneath it just needs to go somewhere, sound a little more gritty in places where its a bit bright and "twirly" and have someone uh different sing it lol.

EDIT: Someone did a "low key" piano rendition of it that sounds far closer to what it should be.

Why does he start singing like his pods are being crushed, is this the in thing these days ?

Last good bond song was Aha.

It has potential. This is glorious - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJSmgPeDWbg

Then it all goes to crap once Sam starts crooning with his piano.

Its only good when it goes back to the lavish orchestral stuff and it just seems to cut between that and piano+whiney voice. It needs that orchestral cue crafted around a more powerful song with a better singer.

I'm going to go against the grain and say I actually like the new Sam Smith tune.

He is undeniably a great singer. Might not be the best bond tune but its not awful.

This tweaked with the lush proper orchestration that Sam Smith's song had would be a million times better, especially the chorus, and a lot of people agree:

24th bond film as well so kind of works. In fact from what I have read this was in contention as the theme but they went for Sam Smith instead. idiots.

Edit - This must have been the submission for Bond - listen to the end 4 mins 46 secs ;)

With a bit of tweaking - atleast without proper orchestration is lacks the kick and urgency of a bond theme - it would be a million times better than the Sam Smith effort (and I'm definitely not a fan of Lana Del Rey).

Will not look :)

I did look... all looks good to me.

I'm only on bloody holiday the week it opens, with no chance to see it till the following Sunday after release. Bloody schools not allowing us to take our kids on holiday during term time, have caused this clash  I mean what is more important Bond or education? :p

Really looking forward to this. Been a bond fan for a very long time and I was sceptical about Daniel Craig at first but I think he's done well.

Did I just see Simon Pegg as the bad guy.....If so, I really hope they've written him in well!! Certainly sounded like him!!

Yup, like others, I was waiting for the song to 'take off' and kick in with the full orchestral score etc - (sadly) not to be!

First time listen, initial impressions, it sounds like the closing title song. I think it may be a case of listening in the context of the opening sequence...
