Evening all, anybody have a full width speed bump outside their property? The reason for asking is we've received notice today that the council intend on constructing one right outside our property. We live on a straight stretch of road just below the brow of a hill, 30mph speed limit which is pretty much ignored at a guess 50mph is the average along the stretch.
Now I'm not against speed reduction measures along the road but just putting one speed bump in at this location over half a mile from the next bump seems pretty pointless, my prediction is it won't slow anybody down but a massive concern from my wife is the increase in noise outside our property.

So back to the original question does anybody have one outside their property and does it cause any issues ie noise?

We had this last year, speed bumps and other speed reducing methods were planned on our street.

There should be some sort of consultation period. We went and gave our views, still not heard anything.

Prepare for bumps and crashing noises from trucks and trailers right outside your house :(. Object as much as you can would be my advice.

This is what I'm worried about, with no other measures there's going to be no reduction in speed prior to it.

If it does go ahead make sure they do it properly, plenty of speed bumps they put down round here over the years don't confirm to the rules. They are either too big or too small.

Speed bumps are waste of the tax payers money all they do is damage your car or give joy riders the urge to go faster. If your a sensible driver then they would be no need to speed down side roads exc. If speed is an issue then adding cameras is more use

Also note from http://www.cleverdodo.co.uk/speed-bump-the-facts/175

  • It is illegal to have speed bumps anywhere within 25 metres of bridges, subways and tunnels; this is due to structural damage that it may cause

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring...umps-cause-structural-damage-to-my-house.html

Earth tremors from the percussion of vehicles crashing over humps can destroy the sub-structure of the road, damaging sewers and old iron water mains.

How close to your house will it be?

Have to say I was going to post that I've not noticed extra noise since they put one outside work but on reading your post I realised just how quickly I'd got used to it - you definitely do get extra crashes from things like trailers, etc. on reflection. Atleast personally I got used to filtering it out pretty quickly.

Note went out to the inlaws about a year ago about putting speed bumps down their road.

They gathered a petition from the residents and sent it in during the consultation period and there weren’t any other responses.

Council built them anyway because the consultation is something they have to do but not something they have to pay attention to. Now they have to put up with noisy acceleration and banging every time a car goes past.

Good luck

I thought they were going to stop using speed bumps because they cause more noise and pollution, from people speeding up and slowing down constantly?

My estate has speed humps all over it, great apart from we are right next to a hospital.
Imagine having broke your back and your ambulance technician says "hold still a minute"

That was my first thought as well, so on some googling it seems it was a story last July

Lots of 'could be removed' as it was just a recommendation in a report. Though it does say Gove has told Councils they should scrap them and prioritise other methods of traffic calming.
So it sounds like a suggestion/recommendation rather than instruction.

And then in August, the backlash

Won't someone think of the children!!?!

I had one installed right outside my bedroom window for about 10 years, I honestly can’t say I noticed any difference in noise before or after it was installed.

It was a more residential style street though so people were usually only doing 40 max.

We have one right outside our house and they are all down the length of our road. People don't slow down much for them and all you get is a horrendous metallic scraping/crunching noise of cars bottoming out as they take them to fast. There are also dints and scrapes on the road either side of the bump from the contact with the bottom of cars. Plus you get the annoying noise of boy racers speeding up between the bumps then slowing down quickly for the next bump.
