Speed limit cuts move a step closer

There is a GATSO right next to a nursery, park and crossing in Bicester where I work. I have seen two occasions where people are checking their speed and very nearly hit a cyclist or kids crossing the road for the park.

Usually on my way to work and going home I set the cruise control to 50mph so I don't have to worry that the rozzers are hiding behind something with a lasergun and that way I don't have to watch my speedometer all the time.

it's making the driving of a performance car/bike in this country a foolhardy choice for the future.

One answer - trackdays :-)

The thing I have an issue with isn't high speeds on NSL roads but rather the other idiot drivers on the lane - as other posters have aluded to.

I was having a nice blat home in the Westfield on Monday evening - not even getting above 60 mph on this twisty section of road, I turn into a left hander at about 30-40mph to be greeted by a people carrier in the middle of the road cutting the corner! I was lucky I was in the Westy and was able to cut right in to the hedge without losing control as the people carrier swerved back to their side of the road (I think they actually stuck it in the hedge a little) - if I had been in the Cosworth I most deffinately think there would have been a collision - despite me travelling well under the speed limit and to the conditions.

Dropping the speed limit to 50mph wouldn't have prevented this situation.

So if ythey very nealy missed them does that mean they actually hit them?

Are there any ramifications setting speed cameras off on a push bike?

they did once "hunt down" someone that had been "speeding" down hills on a push bike.

i saw it in the paper it must be true (well over 2 years ago though). 36 in a 30 i believe...

There has to come a point where we say "The roads are now safe enough." And stop introducing measures which inconvenience us. We passed this point a long time ago.

The 50mh speed limits are the most pointless things ever, it makes NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL.

I currently obey the NSL, if they reduce it, I will ignore it, and just drive as fast as is safe, even if that's 80mph. I will just slow down for the speed cameras/vans/police as best I can.

If we really wanted to make a reduction in KSI figures, we could just ban motorbikes, considering they make a a significantly disproportionate percentage of those killed and injured on the road. (Somewhere around 25% for a 1.8% traffic contributing)

I am not serious, of course, but it's just an example of looking at the problem realistically, we need to treat the causes of these problems, not just randomly and pointlessly lower speed limits which were not the problem in the first place...

Two days ago the deaths from 2008 were published in the news, here in The Netherlands 750 people died which is 41 lower than in 2007 so my first thought was that the NSL can be raised :p

But off course they did mention that they want it down to 500 and other measures will be implimented to get it even lower  (in the seventies the figure was well over 3000)

There has to ccome a point where we accept that inevitably people crash and unfortunately die as a result of that, when will the annoyances stop.

I like your reasoning. It's a good example of where casualty reduction policies that don't involve reducing speed limits are there, but are ignored. Although it is an extreme example.

I don't think the plan is the change the NSL to be 50mph for single carridgeways. It is to leave the NSL as it is but to change the limit on "most" single carridgeways to 50mph. This will require a lot of new signs.

Which is ridiculous as more than 50% of NSL roads are wide enough for barely one car and are 60mph limits when you cant do more than 30, yet its the proper open roads they keep putting 50 limits on...

Yep theres a road by me which I refuse to use now as its a small nsl road which is just about wide enough for 2 cars if you both stick your car into the hedges.

I did 60 down it once for the lolz, never again. :p
