Speed limit cuts move a step closer

I'd rather take the risk and enjoy myself on the roads.

They're just a bunch of sad nannies this government. I won't be voting for them.
Well who are you going to vote for? Tories and Lib Dems both back the suggestions in the house. I can't see Green Party not supporting them either.

Anyway, I agree with cutting the 60mph on single carriage rural roads. Young boy racers see it as a target to be achieved, not a limit. I've seen and heard of so many fatal crashes on such roads around where I lived in Yorkshire. Rural roads aren't in best shape and normally involve a lot of bends, hidden dips, bumps and hide water and ice very well. No one needs to do 60 on them, so make it illegal to do so and hopefully save the lives of some idiots (hmm..)

The 20mph limit, apart from outside schools and parks etc is stupid.

I must admit i find it very hard to drive at 60mph in a 60 limit, i mean that requires some serious skill and car control.... Or not as the case my be...

Since no real policemen exist anymore the only way to deal with this is with more cams or specs, just gives me more things to overtake in the meantime.....

People not doing the speed limit in a 60 **** me off, its not exactly hard, every non electric car built in the past 15 years can do it, so whats the problem, learn how to drive or get off the road.

Shadow Transport Secretary Theresa Villiers said: "Rather than across the board reductions in the speed limit that hit the most responsible drivers, we believe a strategy to make our roads safer needs to target problem drivers."

Are you one of these people who drives at 40mph is 60 zones, no doubt in a Jazz or similar?
I drive as fast as I feel safe driving.

Are you one of those **** in a chavved up Saxo who blitz around NSL rural roads doing an inappropriate 60?

Wonderful, another step further away from a policy that will actually reduce accidents and save lives...

The focus on speed slowed the rate of reduction in deaths significantly, this will just make that problem worse.

Wow, just wow. I really can't beleive this, they think a blanket reduction to 50mph will save lives? I'd be willing to bet it really doesn't, however government statistics will probably skew it so they save elventy billion lives a year.

Then again, I think a lot of this has been released to the press to try and take peoples mind off all the other stuff thats been going on, like the budget and expense claims fiasco.

Great, this means MORE impatient idiots making stupid manoeuvres because the limit has been reduced. Speed is not the main cause of accidents, stupidity is.

BBC says it is only going to be targetted at known bad areas, where deaths are high and what not, so hopefully it shouldnt be a NSL reduction but just changing the sign to 50

But most of these 'dangerous' roads aren't dangerous because of speed, so it won't acheive anything...

Surely ONE DAY they will do the right thing, how obvious do things need to be? Hopefully I won't be 80 by then.

If the NSL becomes 50 then I shall ignore it unit i accumulate 9 points. Its pathetic.

Ditto.

I tend not to read or look for speed signs unless I know there is a camera about. I tend to judge the road on its merits and make my own personal limit up.

If its clear and safe I'll do 60 and if its not I'll do 30, not just because some bloke in London in a suit who's never been on the road demands the limit be X or Y.

The government is expected to announce a raft of proposals today . . .
. . . and then off into comments about speed limit and increased Police powers.

I understand that the Government are also planning to introduce major changes to driver training and the testing process - not much mention of or praise for that on the Autocar link - I do wonder why

... perhaps they should just close those roads altogether :D
