Speedbump @ about 40mph

Just woke up to a call from my rather stupid cousin whos done something rather daft and wonders if hes broken something. He was out racing "some geezer in a civic innit" and went down some residental road with those flat long speedbumps, not the rounded type if you know what i mean. I've been down there and found those to be really mean, like 10mph can still hurt :eek:

Car in question is my uncles 330D estate, 07 i believe. I think its sitting on 16" alloys, not low profile. This all happened around 3:45AM.

They both hit the bump side by side and apparently the civic is leaking something, the 330 looks and drives ok but he thinks it sounds a bit more crashy over the bumps at normal speed now, though it might be in his head with the panic according to him. Anything to look out for? he reckons they hit at 35-40mph and he braked hard before so i guess a little less, he didn't hear any scraping or clunking, just the tyres hitting a bit hard and the car going slightly airborne.. Don't blame anyone who says hes an utter muppet and deserves what he gets!

Damaged tyres.
Bent/broken wheels.
Play in the joints in the suspension bushes and ball joints.
Same for the steering.
Same for the ARB and droplinks.
Bent wishbones.
Damaged subframe.
Damaged springs.
Damaged dampers.

There's a lot than you can break.

Those types of speedbumps you're describing are evil, I don't understand why anyone who has ever driven a car, even some over zealous civil servant, would think they are a good idea, I don't mind normal speedbumps that much, but I really hate these, the ones that make you crawl over them in 1st gear if you don't want any damage :mad:

The muppets at work from another floor moaned about the speed cars are doing between the business entrance and the carpark, and rather than ignoring the people who moan, some person higher up thought it was a good idea to place 4 of these evil bumps. People often drive more dangerously now rather than slowing down, they go as close as possible to the sidewalk to avoid the bumps with 1 wheel and still go as fast as they used to, only closer to the people walking now :rolleyes:

. Some youngsters who borrow their mothers car or whatever seem to completely ignore em and you hear a loud bang 4x as they race over them :confused:

. Anyways I have to go over 4 of these twice pretty much every day now

. Even going in 2nd gear without touching the throttle is often too fast

Still, what made your cousin think it's a good idea to race someone in a place where those utter **** bumps are seeded, or at least to keep it floored rather than braking, don't they rather lose ''the race'' than risk damage to their car ?

Would the damage be apparent immediately? from the sound of it the car seems fine to be honest.

@snowdog, from what i gather they were both overzealous and forgot about the bumps.

No, these are the worst.

They seem to be specifically designed to smash my aluminium sump.

Unless they're quite small I have to wait for traffic coming the other way to pass and mount both at once to get clearance.

I have been aggressively tail-gated and overtaken in these areas. EPIC objective defying.

Potentially very expensive. Get it to BMW for at least a geometry check/general once over of the suspension gubbins.

With any luck it'll be ok and he'll have learnt from his stupidity this time.

He does deserve what he gets, but it's your uncle's car so he'll no doubt be the one to suffer here! I wish we didnt have people like this on our roads

Moron. Like others have said, take it to BMW or a specialist and get them to inspect the suspension/alloys. I'd be shocked if there isn't something broken/bent.

The worst speed bumps are the ones the really small "strip" speed bumps.

Those are lovely, hardly feel them at all if you get right over the middle

on the flip side if youve got a very low car such as myself, you feel them ripping your exhaust off if you go right over the middle lol. I have to do the same as Biggles by going over both of them

They're not that bad, in my golf which was dropped 60mm I could still take those at 15mph without destroying the sump and tearing the exhaust off.

Indeed. The person responsible for these needs a bullet in the brain.
They can't have ever driven or owned a car. I have also been passed in these areas by tools who care not for the underside of their car...

Slow down to about 5mph, drive right in the middle of the road, cause annoyance and frustration. That's how I have to take them.

How high are the ones near you off the road? Ones near my flat are a nightmare, they must have caused some hefty garage bills in their time. Plenty of scraping evident on them.
