Speeding on A1 M

All depends on the police officer, some can be very harsh a work mate ended up with a 6 month ban for 94mph on the motorway ! I've heard of people getting let off with 95-110mph when the officer has giving them a warning etc, really depends on how many bookings they have had that week I suspect.

When I got stopped the policeman said that my driving was perfect apart from the speed. I wasn't tailgating, wasn't weaving in and out, I got straight back to the inside lane etc. so he just warned me and let me go. Had my driving been more BMW driverish then I feel that I would've got a much harsher punishment.

I drive on the M1 every day between J21 - J24 and the average speed in the outside lane varies between 70-100.

I take it being one of those 'many' drivers doing a smidgen below 95 it doesn't mean I stand less chance of being caught?

You'll just have to wait and see to be honest. I was pulled over in April 05 on the A1 round the Alnwick bypass doing an average of 112mph (long story) and like yourself wasn't given any paperwork and was just told that a court summonse would come through the post, nothing ever did!! I wasn't read my rights, I just got a bloody long earful (and rightly so).
What did happen though is for the following 6 months I drove like a saint whilst I was expecting a letter to come through the post. Even though nothing came through I still to this day never hit the kind of speeds that will put me in that position again, 85's the most I'll do now on the road. It taught me a massive lesson and now I keep those kind of speeds for the track only.
Good luck, and hopefully like me it'll teach you to slow down.

bad luck there. I drive the A1M between huntingdon to just past peterborough ie onto the duel carriageway bit then off at the a47 and everyone does 90+ on the 4 lane bit, it's hard not too as it's a massive road that is straight as an arrow, flat and with very little traffic. Must remember to keep my speed down on there as have seen plenty of folks tugged by unmarked cars including a mondeo st220.

were you read you rights ?

if they read you your rights that means they're going to prosecute you. If he didnt, and they didnt give you any bits of paper ive no idea what hes playing at.

yes he said somthing like "Anything I said could be used as eveidence etc etc"

This was just before "Normans cross" he had been following me from Sawtry like you say it is a fast road everyone one was speeding to be honest, I wasnt going like a nutter down the fast lane or should I say "overtaking lane"

oh well done now and still nothing in the post I just wish it would come it is the waitng I dont like!

yeah they've cautionned you

just sit back and await the summonse to court. Unfortunately this sort of thing is dealt with exactly the same as a criminial offence, ie no time limits, no piece of paper having to arrive within 14 days or anything like that

they kept me waiting over 5 months for mine.

You'll just have to wait for the summonse to arrive. Hopefully if you smile sweetly, admit it all, turn up and plead guilty and explain the road was empty at the time, you werent tail gaiting, just a commuter on an empty motorway etc.. and hope they offer you 3 points and £60.

if you've got any questions and stuff (i know how daunting this is, i was **** scared when i went to court) just drop me an e-mail on the address in my trust.

Thanks for that;) much appreciated...so I guess they could even give me a ban for a few months if they wanted ?? or is it more likely 6 points and a fine??

as an extra to this thread..I got flashed whilst overtaking an HGV on the a68 (scottish side of the border) 2 weeks ago today and still had nothing through the post?

whats the timescale on stuff like this..was only doing 68 indicated on the speedo but it is a 60 speed limit....it definitely double flashed

14 days give or take a few days leeway for postal delays when sent a NIP, so roughly 18 days and you should be ok, thats not an absolute figure though.

Assuming he is the registered keeper that is correct. If he isn't (i.e. it is a company car) then it could be a lot longer

they can ban you from 14 -56 days

i got caught at 107 and still only got 28 days

been as you were doing 97, i very much expect a combination of points and a fine if you turn up and do all the stuff i mentioned.

Have you got a clean license ? this could well influence the way the magistrate thinks about you. At the end of the day, there are 3 people in the magistrates panel, and its up to them what they give you. Which side out they feel, you wont know. They coudl be feeling generous that day, or they coudl have had a bad day and want to throw away the key

good luck :)

Yeah I have a clean license I have had it for 15 years and never even been stopped by the police before. Having never had points was somthing I was quite proud of in a way..oh well just have to make sure I dont get anymore!

thanks again for the help ;)

well, they sent me my summons in the end :( it was for the 28th I decided not to attend and wrote a letter of apology. I got the result in the post today...3 points and a £30 fine plus £20 costs and £15 victim costs.

I am quite pleased with that to be honest I thought they would give me a huge fine. I think it was a lot to do with the fact I told them in my letter that "I treated my licence as a privlage and not a right to drive".

I havent gone even a mile an hour over the speed limit since :)

Regards
