I'm trying to get my head around why it takes just as long to start up my pc with an ssd that it did with a normal sata hd.

This is my board

This is my ssd

When I turn teh pc on it counts both drives & the the next screen says start operating system & followed by lots of dots (takes about 20 seconds or so to get to the windows splash).

I have ACHI or whatever it is enabled in teh bios but was there anything else or do I need to do anything to windows, sorry for being totally stupid but I'm still used to a sata hd & windows xp :D & also on nightshift.

Thanx in advance

Kev

It's because you don't have trim to maintain the drive,xp won't support it so performance will degrade over time, you need to backup the data and perform a secure erase then restore your data, then it will restore the lost performance due to a lack of trim

wazza300,

sorry I didnt explain it properly did I, I have win 7 ultimate on with a fresh install on a new drive & have never had any other os on it so winxp has never been anywhere near it. I think confusion came whe I said I'm used to a standard hd with xp on it :D, have you got any other solutions as I know trim support is there with win7

ahh ok only you did mention xp and it threw me

are you using the latest bios? turned off any un needed ports? marvell ports for example as it will speedup the bios/detection boot up and set the hdd time out from 10 sec to 0

not sure if thats still an option on z68,it was on x58

it was part of a bundle that is oc'd to 4.4ghz, sadly its not got the updated bios on but I thought that it would not matter. I didnt realize that it had marvel sata ports grrrr thought they were intel sata3 ports (seen someone else mention gigabyte & marvel ports)

cheers for the help

kev

it has marvell and intel, might have gsata ports aswell,if you turn off the unused ports it helps speedup the bios as it doesnt scan for those ports and boots straight from the ones used

i dont want you to lose your overclock settings which would happen if you updated the bios unless you took pictures of each page/setting then updated to the latest bios and re entered your oc settings

using the latest bios helps as they improve boot times ect

Sounds like the bios post is doing something. I know marvell controllers can slow things down, but the biggest issue is usually those JMIcron or something devices (can't recall the name).

many thanks for the advice :) I shall sort it before I go too work tonight as I sadly cant see too well after my night shift.

I think if you update your bios the warranty on your oc goes out the window. Me personally, I always prefer to have the latest, but might be worth a check with the support guys first before you flash, in case you require some help later on.

20 seconds seems a long time idd, i just tested mine it took 10 seconds from the post beep to windows desktop and i havent really tried changing anything to speed it up. Did it always take that long from new or is it a recent thing?

Ive always used xp & the last time I did have win7 on I had a mechanical sata 2 drive. I will take a look at the settings & write them down & do the update of the bios but I will also do what wazza said & I will turn off unused sata ports.

ok just doing more reading and I have found an old post on here that suggests using the white ports not the blue ones so I think I will give that a go :D

ooo my board layout is different :( although its teh same board I have 2 blue sockets & 6 white sockets, what has gigabyte done there then

When you installed the operating system onto the ssd did you unplug the other hard drives first ?

Some files can get put onto your other drive when you install so you need to unplug it when installing.

Disable all the gsata stuff, assuming you aint using it.
I did and my "Verifing DMI Pool Data" time decreased.
