I am looking for a new monitor in the region of £150 to £160. I am not computer literate, so you might have to explain what things mean.

Here is my spec:

Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD3P AMD 790X (Socket AM3/AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2

Memory-Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX Dual Channel (TWIN2X4096-6400C5C)

Graphics Card-HIS ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - OEM (H487F1GP)

Hard Drive-Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (ST3500418AS)

Optical Drive-LG GH22NS30 22x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black/Beige) - Retail

Case-Coolermaster Elite 335 Case - Black (No PSU)

PSU-OCZ ModXStream Pro 600w Silent SLI Ready Modular Power Supply

OS-Windows 7 RC 64-bit

Thanks

OK. My main uses are train simming and need for speed, music production software, internet, a lot of office documents, watching dvds, and photo editing.

Hope this helps.

By the way would my graphics card be able to handle a "22" or "24" screen resolution?

The ASUS has a higher resolution 1920x1200 vs 1680x1050, a HDMI input and costs less. But the dell uses a far superior panel (eIPS dell vs TN samsung) which has higher image quality and much wider viewing angles. The dell is also backed up by a "premium pixel guarantee" and three years of next working day replacement warranty.

In my opinion, the dell is by far the superior monitor and well worth the extra cost.

How is the dell better when the ASUS has a higher resolution, better contrast ratio, a faster response time, an HDMI input, and it weighs less?

I'm really sorry but apart from having an e-IPS screen, how else is the dell better.

Did you notice/read andi's link?

That should answer your question pretty comprehensively - but basically the picture quality, colour reproduction, consistency and viewing angles will be better than that of the ASUS. (subjective of course but on the whole most ppl/industry agree)

But, if ~£160 is your budget the Asus is still a good monitor and will serve your needs well. But as you mentioned ‘watching dvds, and photo editing’ as one of its primary uses, you would, probably, benefit more from the DELL’s superior e-IPS panel.

Sorry. I did read the link, but I don't think I fully understood the first time. Thank You for your little explanation. I think it will be the dell. Just a little more saving to do.

Would it be worth waiting until January and see if I can get it in the sale somewhere?

Thanks for everyone's help/advice.

I'm not sure it will drop much more in price as it's a premium monitor for its size - and is still very much in demand.

You 'may' save ~£10 through sales or a 'this week special' (it appears on these frequently) - plus you only need 150 more posts to be entitled to free p&p which will save you another £10 - link

I really like Overclockers, but, are they really the cheapest?

I can't go into too much detail on that one due to forum rules - but on a 'this week special' with free p&p the DELL would be a very, very good price.

From a quick google it's competitive at it's present price even when paying the p&p.

As of Jan 2010, 2.5% v.a.t will be reinstated (back to 17.5%) so unless products are heavily discounted in sales, prices for most goods will increase.
Bearing in mind a lot of retailers did not "seem" to drop 2.5% (excuses such as "manufacturers put up prices to compenste there 2.5% loss") prices will defo go up.
