Split Air con

do you have a detached home?
semi-detached = 1 external unit
detached = 2 external units

any more than that and you need full planning permission

if you're living in a semi-detached and already have two external units, hopefully your neighbours aren't grasses

Or if no one can see them all. We have 3. No one cares. Can’t see the third anyway.

always a bonus when they're ahead of schedule!

Yep. All done.

man, i can't wait until mine's done...the wait is incessant
should've been done by now, but installers pushed it back until end-of-year due to parts shortages

Booked on for 1st March

Ducted, 2x 5kw units servicing 2x2.5kw bedrooms each. Hands were tied due to two rooms having sloped ceilings under roof with nowhere to mount the split units.

£8.8k. a bit higher than I wanted but couldn't fit 1x 10kw unit through the hatch which couldn't be enlarged sadly.

Anyway, pumped (haw) to get it sorted.

It is but I've seen their work and as long as it's in before summer gets angry, I'm fine with it.

Plus, I've got a car and garden to pay for this side of Christmas

Had the survey done today, due to the layout of the house and a potential expansion we both agreed two external units would be required. One unit driving three maybe four (quote dependant) internals on one side of the house, and another doing two internals with a potential for a 3rd if I convert the garage into an office/gym space.

10 kW seems like quite a massive amount of capacity for 4 bedrooms to me, do you really need all of that? I suspect 1x 5-6kW would probably serve you just fine unless the rooms have something about them to make the load so high.

For reference, we have a bedroom that faces SE and SW, so it gets blasted by the midday sun, and on the hottest day of the past year that room didn't exceed a cooling demand of ~1 kW. Looking back at the 13th August, the hottest day here, the outdoor unit that services 3 bedrooms recorded 35.8 C outdoors, and was running at an average input power of 305 W. That is around 1.5-1.8 kW cooling for all 3 bedrooms combined. All those bedrooms were at 21.x C, which is our general daytime cooling target temp.

I wouldn't recommend someone installs 2 kW of capacity for 3 bedrooms either, and we do have units downstairs that help reduce the upstairs load somewhat, but I suspect you won't need as much as 2.5 kW per room either. So if you can get away with a smaller unit it's probably more space/wallet/modulation friendly too.

Just had a quote back for 5 rooms;
Samsung 8kW outdoor unit
Samsung Cebu Units
3 Bedrooms, 2kW units
3.5kW for kitchen
2.5kW for lounge
£6,983.

If we just get Lounge, Kitchen and 1 bedroom £4906.

I also had a quote for Daiken Ducted units for upstairs, and normal wall units downstairs, but it’s near in 10k, too much for us!

I thought so, I have just asked the cost difference for their Windfree version
this is gemini's tier list:

Code:
The Samsung Cebu S2 sits as a more straightforward, value-oriented smart inverter line, while the WindFree Comfort (Comfort S2) includes Samsung's signature draft-free micro-hole technology at a mid-tier price point.
Samsung Residential Air Con Tier Structure
Samsung's high-wall residential line-up generally ranks from top-tier flagship to entry-level practical:
1. Elite S2 (Top Tier): Premium performance, highest energy efficiency, motion detect sensors (MDS), and advanced airflow.
2. Avant S2 / Avant Black (Upper-Mid Tier): Exceptional efficiency (up to A+++), ultra-quiet operation (down to 16 dB(A)), and Freeze Wash.
3. WindFree Comfort S2 (Mid Tier): Balanced draft-free micro-hole cooling, embedded Wi-Fi/SmartThings, and standard comfort operation (~54 dB).
4. Cebu S2 (Entry-to-Mid Practical Tier): Standard smart inverter basics, brand familiarity, and reliable cooling/heating without the full flagship feature set.
5. Luzon S2 (Base Tier): Standard inverter functionality without WindFree micro-hole technology.
