Sponsoring hell

Excuse me, but I'd like a RANT.

I must have spent £40 in the last 4 months or so sponsoring colleagues/ friends/family etc to do sponsored CRAP.

1) Someone at work doing a sponsored hill climb. He simply walked up a hill.
2) Then a sponsored 1 mile walk for my other halfs' sister for diabetes
3) Then my OH herself walking again a whole mile to get some lame ribbon
4) Back to work again with some guy doing something - honestly I'm losing interest by now, I dont even know what he did but there's £5 gone
5) Friend doing a walk for Canaries with headaches or something equally deserving
6) Sponsored something at my daughters nursery - sponsor a pakistani child - seriously, WTF? Sponser them to do what?

And now to top it off my daughter is doing a sponsored dance next week. She's 2 years old, she dances if you so much as look at her funny.

How LAME are sponsored events getting? Back in my day you'd sponsor someone 50p max to do something challenging. Like 50p per 5 laps of the school 400m track.

Where is the challenge in this? Walking up a hill? I'd be impressed if he was an amputee, but both legs are in tact.

1 Mile walk? Make it a 2 mile sprint and I'm all ears.

Maybe I'm just being miserable but next person who asks me to sponsor them gets a sponsored "FO"!.

Btw - this of course is a patheric excuse for you lot to sponsor me. Today I'm doing a sponsored "post on OcUK instead of working". Please remember to tick the Gift Aid before hitting submit.
 
I see what you mean and the same way i feel about charity events that promotes or sponsors someone's expensive habit.
 
I hear you my friend, I NEVER sponsor anyone to do anything. That is a lie, I would sponsor them to **** off and leave me alone. :mad:

Gilly yes it does, i wont be drawn into a debate with you. The OP dosent feel like the money he is giving away is worth what they do to earn it, same way i feel about charity - My view on charity is parallel to that, why should i sponsor someone to fund their expensive habit?
 
Last thing I sponsored was a Cassy's Sponsored Toddle - a 2 yr old toddling round the entire nature walk. :)

I only sponsor a proper amount when there's good reason and something challenging being done :) I'll sponsor 50p to friends kids and familys kids that don't fullfil this so I don't offend/upset them usually. Adults however I'll tell straight.

But nothing the OP lists is an expensive habit :confused: He thinks they should do more while you seem to think they should do something cheap.

Thats not at all what he is saying though, is it? He's saying that what they're doing isn't worth doing. You're saying that should someone want to do something worthwhile then they should pay for it themselves, even if they're making charities money, which is, quite frankly, quite stupid.

If someone can't afford to do something that they could fund through a charity then that person can't do what they wanted to and the charity gets less money. How on earth such an opinion can be held is beyond me.

Me. If you don't want to discuss things and have people challenge your points then don't post them. Its really quite simple.

I'm just glad there aren't others with your opinions. You'd cripple charities overnight.
 
The only sponsored event I take part in is a martial arts sponsored spar. 60 minutes sparring, 2 minutes per round with the only break being finding your next opponent!

If I do say it myself, that's a worthy challenge! :)

Just going to say this -
eg Sponsored parachute jump. The jumper collects £350 but the training and jump cost £300.
Recently Firstborn did The Marathon De Sables which cost around £4500 to do BUT HE PULLED THIS OUT OF HIS OWN POCKET and the collection went to charity. I bet others used the sponsor money to do the marathon.
My daughter recently did an abseil which cost £20 but that was paid for out of the £80 she collected.

The events in the OP put all the money into the charity (hopefully) and I have no objection to that.

Charity gets £50 they wouldn't have otherwise got = no problem.
 
I can't stand it when the first couple of names (mums, dads, other halfs) on a sponsor sheet have obviously been coerced into putting down £5 or £10, thus making the first person to offer less look cheap.
