Spring Budget 2023

The only people who don't have financial stress are those on the treacle stick. I can assure you my near-on 4k mortgage is a gigantic worry for me and if I lose my job it is incredibly difficult to get back on my feet.
4k left on a mortgage and you couldn’t get back on your feet.

Sounds like some very poor financial planning there

I fail to see why so many people (presumably most of them parents) seem to think it's EVERYONE ELSE's responsibility to help pay for THEIR kids?

YOU made the choice to have children, YOU should pay for their childcare.

Why the hell should you keep getting handout after handout while those who choose NOT to have kids just get screwed over paying for everyone elses?

In the old days the choice was simple... If you chose not to have kids, you typically ended up with much higher disposable income to spend on yourself...

Now because everyone is getting handouts from the Government, those who chose not to have kids are subsidizing those of you who did, it's a ***** disgrace.

Pay for your own damn kids or don't have them. Take some bloody responsibility in your lives.

Poor people should stop smoking then. It isn't difficult maths.

It's legal to smoke and people still have freedom of choice. We're not talking about people making choices, we're talking about how the government is choosing to tax those choices.

I think there's a legitimate argument for some degree of sin taxes, but the levels in the UK are already simply punitive. UK rates are substantially higher than many countries across Europe but the fall in smoking rates hasn't been similarly higher.

Here, here, couldn't agree more.

I think society had less problems when one parent stayed at home to avoid latch key kids.

I'm currently in Milan and it's like being in London in the early 2000s. I can't imagine UK is far up that list. And if it is, clearly affordability isn't an issue?

I can't disagree with this, and sadly it's not the council trash who are foregoing kids.

It is in a way, in that if nobody had kids then society (that childless people enjoy living in im sure) would collapse.

Agree but if others get handouts, I also want handouts regardless of my salary.

But surely that's not the LTA giving the incentive to retire, it's that that person can retire and live a better life without working? Raising the LTA to £1.8 million or whatever doesn't change the maths?

That's assuming a 60 year old on £50k realistically could've reached a £1m pot, without the help of final salary type pensions, which I kinda doubt...

That's the kind of salary I am on currently and my financial planning puts me on target to exceed the current LTA a couple of years before the state retirement age. Compound interest and salary sacrifice ftw (plus a generous employer contribution) :)

So not by 60 then?

Also doesn't address the first and arguably main point of my post.
