Spring Budget 2023

Cigarettes are stress relief for the poor. Rich people rely on the white powder instead... (/sarcasm just in case it wasn't clear..)

Cigarettes are not a stress relief though. They are a relief to the addiction of nicotine. They offer nothing else. (I smoked for over ten years, started when I was 15 and quit mid 20's)

Here, here, couldn't agree more.

I think society had less problems when one parent stayed at home to avoid latch key kids.

Whilst you might be right, the Government decision to basically ditch council housing in the 80s eliminated any possibility of that happening for the current generation of child-rearing. Two parents have to work simply in order to put a roof over their heads.

Is he boasting about bringing the debt down after massively increasing it for the last 13 years?

Remember getting rid of the deficit? Or how austerity would bring our debt down (it did to some extent) or be rid of it?

I fail to see why so many people (presumably most of them parents) seem to think it's EVERYONE ELSE's responsibility to help pay for THEIR kids?

YOU made the choice to have children, YOU should pay for their childcare.

Why the hell should you keep getting handout after handout while those who choose NOT to have kids just get screwed over paying for everyone elses?

In the old days the choice was simple... If you chose not to have kids, you typically ended up with much higher disposable income to spend on yourself...

Now because everyone is getting handouts from the Government, those who chose not to have kids are subsidizing those of you who did, it's a ***** disgrace.

Pay for your own damn kids or don't have them. Take some bloody responsibility in your lives.
How short sighted are you!
So you would be all for a huge increase to taxes to cover the loss in income 16 or so years later?
Children are a net increase not a loss.

Hunt bragging about mortgage rates coming down I see. They might be down but only compared to the rates caused by the clown show Truss and Kamikwasi combo.

As for growth, lol at that.

So not by 60 then?

Also doesn't address the first and arguably main point of my post.

My original point earlier in the thread is that people may actually want to stay working (my parents are a current example) because they are mentally and physically still capable in their 60s and aren't ready to throw in the towel yet. Increasing the LTA means they can continue to work for longer and build up a bigger pot before retiring (which is exactly what the Government wants to do to stop the workforce shrinking).

You want it to go up?

I'd rather it had gone up consistently for the last 12 years but, yes, it should go up. Fuel prices are very effective way to promote fuel efficient cars and you only need to glance at the SUV and Crossover crap cluttering the average car dealer forecourt to see that there isn't enough incentive for that.

You can still increase your pot for retirement once you pass the LTA you just don't get the same generous tax benefits for it.

It's legal to smoke and people still have freedom of choice. We're not talking about people making choices, we're talking about how the government is choosing to tax those choices.

I think there's a legitimate argument for some degree of sin taxes, but the levels in the UK are already simply punitive. UK rates are substantially higher than many countries across Europe but the fall in smoking rates hasn't been similarly higher.

Who cares. When theres talk about the poor having shorter life spans, people usually point to the fact they dont have enough money to eat healthily or pay for things like gym memberships yet here you are arguing that cigarettes is disproportionally affecting the poor. Maybe if they didnt smoke they could eat better food and afford to exercise (not that you need money to walk or run). People cant argue why poor people have shorter life spans whilst arguing about their right to smoke themselves to death and forgoing eating good food or exercise.
