Driving back from the pub today (no I didn't drink anything!) after watching the rugby, I was coming round one of the last corners before my house, a fairly wide turn, at about 25-30mph when I lost it into a skid and ended up in the middle of the road, perpendicular to the kerb. Luckily nothing was coming in either direction. Completely mistook the conditions as the road was pretty greasy after the first rain in a while here but the lack of grip really surprised me, especially since I drive a FWD car. Do you reckon it's worth getting the tyres checked out?

Only been driving a couple of months but you live and learn! I'll be much more careful in future, shook me up a bit.

Let me guess...

You were going a bit quick and lifted off mid corner following some understeer due to the rain? Either that, or you hit some diesel or other crap...

Good thing that nobody was hurt and you have learned how not to behave mid-corner :D How was the adrenaline?

I'd go for the understeer theory, although the surface on that corner is a bit tetchy even in the dry.

The adrenaline was definitely flowing, though.

you got off verry lightly like one or two other on hear. i was much more unfortunate and someone was coming the other way:( learn your lesson.
and you can cherck your tryes yourself go to a petrol station with an air line if there anywer enear 30 psi then there at least ok but might not be right for your car what ever i just have 30 in all 4 tyres.

Tyre pressures really are specific to each car and indeed tyre. 30psi in all 4 corners sounds a bit dodge to me.

The car's hand book will have the official pressures.

Christ my local Morrisons is like an ice rink.

As you go in the road is like a big S, even at 10 mph you can see people sliding about on it, its especially nasty when weve had a little rain!

Local Sainsburys is like that. Almost mounted the curb in the Mondeo once, managed to use gears to stop the car with the ABS going crazy. I was sliding at about 2-5mph for ages toward a curb. Gave me chance to think and I straightened up the wheels so wouldn't damage them on the curb, didnt actually mount it though.

Lift Off Oversteer - Ive never managed to provoke it, even when trying, even in the Type R :D maybe im not trying hard enough.

Enter 90 degree corner at 70mph brake - lift off and then it will spin :D

Tyre pressures are fine, just wondering if the car was previously fitted with crappy rubber by the last owner (only had the car half a year). Will have a check in the morning.

Luckily the bend has very good visibility, if there's someone coming the other way I'm always much more careful.

Stickier tyres will help but they wont stop it. Its not particularly hard to provoke lift-off oversteer though, especially in the wet and again depending on what car you have and how the weight is distributed.

My boyfriends little sister spun her car last night, she managed to clip the front of a lorry coming off the slip road on the the A12, manged to spin her self all the way into a tree. Luckily she isn't hurt, but the car is a write off. I think she was proper pooping herself.

I wrote my car off on New Years Day through lift-off oversteer

Was driving around a 90 degree corner in the wet and thought I was going a little fast. Lifted off and the back end immediately snapped out. Ended up in a lampost

The roads are reaaal slippy at the moment. I'm having traction problems accelerating out of corners with a puny 75bhp. Must be tricky for those of you with proper cars :o :P
