Square Enix hit Steam

Did you quote that irrelevant bit and then ignore the bit at the bottom where it says worldwide completely?

Awesome news.. if we lived in North America.

Yet another developer forgetting about the rest of the world on Steam >:/

That quote's just ambiguous, it's saying that it is the publisher of Square Enix interactive entertainment (i.e. the stuff they make). It then goes on to imply the games will be world wide.

Anyway, since they're developing XIII for the 360, they're almost certainly gonna port it to the PC at some point, this is probably a precursor to that.

So it does.. I was a little tipsy last night :)

We'll have to wait and see.. I'm not trying to be negative - if The Last Remnant is available to UK Steam customers, I'll seriously think about getting it - but after the EA "worldwide" release of MA, ME and the like (ie. everywhere in the world bar the UK) I've a bit of criticism.

Doubt it. The PC one looked bad simply because it still used the 320x240 res backdrops from the PS1 version (though the 3d was rendered at 640x480). They'd have to rerender every backdrop in the game to get it looking better (though I'd guess it wouldn't take too long to do these days).

Apparently the source material is all gone. That's why they didn't upscale it in the first place.

FF7 and FF8 would be great, although it doesn't much matter to me because I can never get Steam to work :(

Tried buying 2 games on seperate occasions but it says there is a problem and to try again later. Meh...

Will download that later tonight to have a go.

Hopefully it doesn't suffer the annoying texture pop-in or at least the jerky framerates are slightly better.

The demo is a bit underwhelming. Looks nice enough, runs smoothly enough (though you can see the odd bit of texture loading every now and then if you look), but I think the problem is what they've actually given you with the demo.

It throws you straight in with no idea what is going off, or what the general story/plot is. There's simply no hook to drag you in. Ok, it means that it won't really spoil anything for when the full game is released, but I think it will lose them customers. Two of my mates just watched me play through it, and the general consensus was "well, the graphics look nice...".

Saying that, I hated the original demo for FFXII, but loved the actual game. Probably give it a proper chance as long as they don't overcharge for it. Will be interesting to see what price point Square drop it in at on Steam.

I remember the FF VII conversion for the PC being poo, will the Steam one be different if it it does come to steam?

FFVIII for the PC was also total bum, I believe that they cited trouble they had doing it coupled with the huge amount of problems they had fixing both games after release as the reason the series ended on the PC.

FFVII - If you had Voodoo 2 in Sli would render cutscenes upside down, the music was pants, the backdrops were awful.

FFVIII - If you had any ISA soundcard (which lots of people were still using at the time due to the superior midi on the older soundblasters) the cut scenes would stutter and freeze. Modern graphics cards produced terrible lag and artifacts when going into battles (I swapped to an old matrox item to improve things). There were points during the game where if you had a specific system config it would just crash and this problem took them a long time to sort.

I played FFIX on the PC using an emulator, which gave superior visual quality and reliability than the 2 previous versions that were officially released on the pc.

Yeah. I still use my old FFVII and FFVIII PSX discs in an emulator - far superior to the PC versions (though i've not tried them with all the new mods).

I'm starting to think that the texture loading problem its partly how the Unreal Engine 3 is cause I know that it does the same thing even in Unreal Tournament 3, especially noticable when everything is loading up within the first few seconds when you get in-game.

Apart from that though, it does look very nice with everything on the highest setting and runs quite smoothly. It obviously does run much faster with a decent PC compared to the 360 version, although I have noticed the same annoyances here and there which plagued that one. I also had a bit of a problem setting up the right control configurations seeing as I use a PS2 pad and not a 360 pad.

Yeah for people who are new to this game, the demo doesn't exactly help them and will probably instantly draw them away. Luckily I spent some time on the Xbox 360 version so I know how the combat mechanics work. You can already do a couple side-quests right near the start by talking to other characters/NPCs around the town.

When you really think about though, pretty much most demo versions of Square games in the past just thrust you somewhere into part of the story already without any tutorial of sorts. I remember the PlayStation version of FFVIII was the awesome Dollet Mission with the PC version being in the Balamb Garden Training Centre. This is something they definately need to work on concerning their demo/trial games.

I will pick this version up if its a decent price on Steam cause so far it does look and play pretty okay.

I still have the 360 version on the shelf since a brought it on the day of release but I still give the PC version a try.
Those texture loading pop up will never go away as thats one of the downfalls of using the Unreal Engine 3. Gears of War and Lost Odyssey on the 360 are the worse for doing this apparently even though I never noticed it much.

The battles in that demo are giving my 8800GT a right beating, guess it's time to turn down some settings.

alt link since SquareEnix pulled it from their site (it's not supposed to go up until tomorrow).

Having recently moved house I managed to dig out my original FF7 PC discs and this thread has reignited my interest in playing - however, it is just unplayable in its original state on a modern pc.

People have discussed mod packs to help make things more playable- has anybody had any experience with these mods/addons? If so how did you find the game with them ? and any links/names please? :)

Cheers,

Just noticed a rather, shall we say "dodgy" combination of speech/text that can crop up in combat..

"Crap, they caught us with our pants down."
"Rear Assault!"
