Squid Game

I think various actors were overacting in a style appropriate for korea. And others were playing their roles straight and coming across as normal people you wouldn't think twice about.

Before you criticise overacting too much, remember there are TONS of western actors you know who overact the **** out of their roles.

Then there were the VIPs who were given terrible lines and told to act bored in masks so I think they were quite limited in making a good impression.

I liked the performances from the indian, the financial guy, the recruiter and the gangster.

The lead had a lot more range to cover than any of them and while the more sentimental parts were good I didn't get transported by his action scenes.

Didn't think there was any overall acting issue.

Yeah, regardless of how much might have been lost in translation with the subtitles, the acting itself was clearly pretty bad (even when ignoring the VIPs).

And I wouldn't use mainstream UK tv as any sort of yardstick. :p

Really? I thought it was very very good, the main actors did a fantastic job.

I didn't really see any issues with the acting either, i suspect it'll have been a low budget production, so a) not dealing with leading actors, and b) not having a leading producer.

Also why would anyone watch it subtitled if it's dubbed? It's probably no wonder you disliked it as most of the time would have been spent reading the words rather than watching what was going on.

Because it was better., The "acting" in the dubbing was awful and from what I read the dubbing was a terrible translation as well, pretty much edited out all of the swearing and other stuff.

Was far superior to watch it in subtitles and hear the original actors voices with all the feelings and nuances put into it.

The guy complaining about the acting watched the dubbed version. All the rest of us happy with the acting watched the subtitled version.

I'm a total opposite, will never watch a dub of anything if subtitles are available. Lose the inflection and authenticity behind the acting itself with a dub for most things.

It's barely a glance down to read the subs too, never felt like I'm missing anything by reading subtitles.

I watched it all in English with subtitles. I just tried a few bits of it in Korean with subtitles to see what it's like. I love foreign subtitled movies but tbh I'm glad I watched this with the English voice dubbing. It's very good and also,

the female voice giving game instructions has a more sinister effect about it in English, and when saying "greeeeen light!"... "red light!" that comes across much better than hearing it in Korean.

And this is interesting for those that have already seen the whole thing.

My take on #2

At the end when Gi-hun went to see the old man and he told him he was pretty much dying, i got the impression he said he only entered the games for a bit of fun (he clearly didn't need the money). So if he died during the games, then he was OK with that. It was more the thrill/adrenaline he was after rather than the fear of dying.

I got the same impression too. Though after watching it back, the signs are there that he was protected in some of the games..

In Red light, Green light when the girl is scanning for people moving we see the view through her eyes and everyone who's scanned has a green outline, ll-nam wasn't scanned/green, so even if he did move slightly, he was never going to get gunned down.

In the Honeycomb game, even if his broke the only people checking were the guards, they knew who he was so he was protected.

When everyone started to riot in the dorm after lights out the Front Man was watching him on them thermal camera and only put the lights back on when he started to get scared, thus sending the guards in to calm everyone down and protect ll-nam.

Tug-of-war, he knew a trick which he said on screen but even so, they still could have lost, not sure what would have happened if the other team won, maybe he would accept his fate..? I know someone on here said he wasn't locked to the rope but I couldn't confirm that myself.

When the police officer is in the Front Man's office where the list of participants and winners are, he picks up the current games folder, the first person listed isn't 001 but 002, ll-nam isn't officially listed as a player in the game.

I'm sure there were more signs but these are the few which spring to mind.

I won't watch a dubbed version at all even if there's no subbed version available. Words not being properly synced up with the actors' lip movements is hugely distracting. Unwatchable for me.

About #2

The old guy wasn't padlocked to the rope like the others were. There's a long pan shot down the players and his padlocks are missing.

I don't think that's right. I took a couple of screenshots.

I suppose its like most things that become hugely popular, in so far as they aren't always the best in their genre / class but they seem to hit at the right time. Squid game definitely seems to fall into this category.

I'm not finding it particularly enthralling, certainly no more so than any other similar shows. I'd argue hunger games did justice to the premise much better and I'm not really a fan of them.

I do like the Korean styling and weirdness but once you get past that, the plot doesn't seem particularly strong and is largely predictable.

Overall its a good watch but definitely over hyped because k pop and Korean culture in general is very much 'in' at the moment.

Or maybe everyone just really enjoys it more than you do???
