Is it possible to setup a system with a single SSD as the main boot and app drive then a seperate mirrored RAID just for holding data?

Not sure if RAID has to be on the boot disk?

This is theoretical for a new PC I am thinking about.

Yes it's possible.

You install the OS onto the SSD with the SATA controller set to RAID mode but with the HDDs disconnected.

You then connect the HDDs and set up the RAID array without including the SSD.

I have this arrangement on a couple of my PCs. I had everything connected and the RAID array setup before the Windows install and it was fine. There used to be an problem with TRIM not working automatically with a mix of SSD and RAID on Intel chipsets but that was resolved with updated drivers a long time ago.

Thank you for confirming it.
Just on what was said above, I have heard of TRIM, but does it need anything configuring or is automatic if an SSD is installed?

Not built a PC for 4/5 years so be out of touch!
