how long before they become affordable anyone think that a 128 gb sata 2 drive will be around £200 this year cause i am itching to buy one and do you think samsung will be the first to lower prices?

I don't think atm that they're cost effective to act as a storage drive so I might be looking at a pair of the smallest ones setup in RAID 0 for my operating system.

As to when they'll lower their prices will probably match when more and more companies release them....

Quite odd (I stand to be corrected here) but I've heard nothing from the main hard drive manufacturers about solid state drives (e.g. WD, Seagate, Maxtor), only from Samsung who already make flash memory. Quite interesting really, it might be time for the RAM manufacturers to come out ontop e.g. I think OCZ have just released their own version.

WD, seagate, etc who dont make SSDs must be slightly worried. surely they must have something planned. Maybe they just plan on buying someone out.

At least 1 year for 128GB drives come down to an acceptable level, in 1½-2 years you'll probably see some higher capacity alternatives with attractive prices, so many players already signed up for this game so competetition will be wild.

As a consumer - wait, currently this is only for servers :)

Sorry - another thing, i'm 100% sure that Seagate will be making an SSD, there's just no reason to put out something crappy right now, rather finetune the products and get ready for a primetime release that shows them on top of the game.

I just want some places to stock the 8 or 16gb Samsung with SATA connector. Will make a perfect OS drive for my media centre.

Would that not likely come in the same form as the early SATA HDDs (i.e. bodged conversion makes for a drive that can only be slower than the PATA equivalent)? I've got a 32GB Samsung PATA SSD with Vista on it, and frankly I don't think the data rates are getting bottlenecked by PATA, it's more about I/O for boot and virtual memory at the moment.
