Hi,

I was wondering how much space Vista Home Premium takes up as the SSDs are very small at the moment. Also I heard about using flash memory as a boot drive. Is this reliable?

Thanks a lot.

A USB Stick is going to be pretty Slow for Sustained Transfers m8.

There was a review weeks ago where the site made a SSD using Mulitple USB Sticks.

Vista 64 ultimate sp1 takes up 12-13gb for the windows folder on the Samsung 32GB ssd i use. Turning off hiberation (which takes about 4gb more), system restore and setting the page file to 1gb instead of 4gb leaves a 32GB ssd with approx 17-18GB free space.

You can use programs like vlite to reduce the vista install size more.

A ssd is slower for transfer rates (unless its the newer 100MB ssd drives) but the access time i only 0.2ms.

A ssd is great if you want a completly silent drive which i wanted, and is still pretty quick in vista with low access times but the newer ssds will be faster than normal hard drives and the disk space will be increased. (hopefully the prices will drop as well)

Wonder if these intel ssd's will be as good as they say :-

There are two companies that have the F1 320 in stock. They can be found with a little help of a well known search engine. But I am going to wait as I've never heard of either and they are asking for a bit more then other companies who don't have them in stock.

Thanks.

What do you think of them for boot time, and how long does the install take?

Sorry i could'nt get back to you sooner but the vista load time is 35 seconds from starting the pc to getting into windows with 15 seconds of that time used on the motherboard screens before vista loads.

I'm not sure how long the install took but no longer than a normal hard drive.

Is yours completely silent? I can't hear mine now (since the X2s), but I could hear faint electrical noises from mine (in the right conditions moving the mouse seemed to make it quietly chirp).

They are very snappy :D

edit: oh yeah, I limited the recycling bin and system restore to a couple of GBs each and moved the temp folder to another disk, I've got about 10GB spare. Installing from a disk with SP1 slip-streamed really helps.

Most computer parts seem to make slight electrical noises so i cant tell if the ssd is making any or not. The silverstone fanless psu i use makes a slight electrical noise if you put your ear up to it, and theres a very slight buzz from my UPS, so a system will never be completly silent but very near silent. The system is definately more silent with the ssd than when i had a Samsung hd501lj suspensed in my case with elastic. :)

edit : yeah when close up to the pc there is a sight electrical noise when transferring files in windows more so with large files but i can hear the noise of the ups and the 4x400rpm fans in my system more when i'm that close.
