SSD in my Mac Pro *updated with performance figures* (and video)

Interesting - I'll let you know how I get on.

Please do mate, I'm really interested in the M4.

I have a feeling the firmware update released this week for the MBP's may have fixed any previous issue. People on other apple related forums saying that since the update their SSD performance is noticeably better - and thats across all brands of SSD's not just Crucials.

Could it be just an issue on the 17" macs because of the unshielded SATA cable picking up crosstalk from the power leds?

Bit of mini-bump for this but I have a couple of questions relating to this so I thought I'd post here rather than start a new thread. I've just ordered the 8Gb RAM kit for my 2009 13" MBP and I want to stick an SSD in it at the same time. I was thinking of either the Crucial RealSSD C300 256GB 2.5" or the Crucial RealSSD M4 256GB 2.5". Will either of these do or is there a recommended SSD (250Gb needed) which would be better???
Another couple of questions...
- do I need a cradle or will it fit straight in perfectly?
- do I need to do anything to prep the drive pre/post-install, or can I just install it and then install OSX? (I will be also be using Bootcamp and installing Windows 7).

For your MBP you should get a SATAII SSD like an older intel or the Vertex 2. Those newer drives you linked would be over kill, you need SATA III to get the fullest out of them.

You wont need a cradle if it's to replace the stock 2.5" HDD.

Just install as you would normally (do not 0 the drive for god sake), by formatting it to HFS+ Journaled. :)

That's what I thought, so I said that to Crucial and they said there's been compatibility issues across all 3 sizes.

Aw well. :( I'm getting rid of my MBP and going to a MBA next summer for when I start my Masters so gonna have to say goodbye to 'fast' SSDs anyway. :p

I can confirm that I'm seeing freezing issues with the M4 and my 15" MBP. Even after the update this week it still freezes although it's less often. During normal usage it's probably happened three of four times which isn't too bad but it is a shame as it ruins the SSD experience. I'm debating if I should move the SSD into the SATA II slot, but I'll probably wait until I find the problem too annoying.

Boot time is awesome though! :D

I haven't sold my X-25 yet so I could go back to that but to be honest so far the freezes haven't been frequent enough to annoy me and the M4 is so much faster than the Intel. More importantly I've got free space which was the reason for the upgrade, I couldn't fit everything onto the Intel.

It's a shame that Crucial haven't got to the bottom of this, I'd have thought a Sandybridge SATA III laptop would be their target market.

I think I'll hold out deciding just yet but the Vertex 3 is looking ever so much more appealing.

Agreed, I'm thinking of wrapping the SSD cable with tinfoil to see if that helps.

Well you would only need to do that in the 17inch model as it's the only one where the battery indicator cable goes under the drive too, as that seems to be where the interference stems from.

I might try it anyway, although I hope I'm not tempting fate, I've not had any freezes in the last few hours.

Out of interest have you enabled TRIM?

Turn it off and see what happens if you have. I've read more bad things than good from users since they enabled it.

The EFI update switches it off and I haven't bothered reenabling it.

Also, since the EFI update I've noticed a small performance boost but not sure if its the update or switching trim off that's helped.

Yeah the EFI update has had an effect on SSD's in the MBP's even though the changes haven't been publicised.
