SSD Prices

Is the Samsung still a good contender in this game? Only reason I ask is because I can get my hands on a 128gb samsung at the moment (from a friend) for less than half the price of the Crucial 128

Just done the same, the 500GB seagate in my HTPC is sounding decidedly unhealthy. All my media is networked so i only need around 20GB space for the OS (Vista, but may put 7 on the rebuild) and XBMC.
XBMC caches a whole load of movie poster thumbnails and other IMDB details locally, and can be pretty laggy when opening and scrolling large folders atm so i'm hoping to see a decent improvement here.
Machine should be almost silent after this, cpu and gpx are passive and it's using a quiet 120mm fan antec psu.

OC must be kicking themselves for ignoring these, they seem to be selling like hotcakes (sold out on the whole first page of froogle results, i think i got the last one at £74)
At the rate they are selling prices are bound to go up once stock comes back in. I could see these shifting quickly even at £90-£100

I've done this and the single drives suit HTPCs really well, with Win7 Ultimate, apps and a few tweaks I'm only using 17.5gb :)

I've put up a thread in Product Suggestions forum, so here's hoping OCUK will stock them.

Buy it! They are good performers, I prefer the Crucial over my Samsung.

Make sure it's the PB22J model though. Also if you can find out the firmware revision, we will be able to tell you whether it is GC enabled (keeps the drive clean during idle periods). Sadly no support for new firmwares on the Samsung drives yet, so no sign of TRIM.

But that wouldn't stop me buying it for that price if you're satisfied it's all working :)

Thanks a lot! you said pretty much what I wanted to hear :D although the TRIM thing - Im not sure how much of an issue this is going to be

Useful but not critical, especially if you have GC. I get the impression a lot of people see it as a deal breaker - mainly those who dont understand SSDs but have heard the term, I think of it as a nice to have.

yea definitely, by the time my hard drive "degrades" they will be cheap enough to buy a faster/higher capacity drive for far less (as in about 2 years time im thinking)
