Was just wondering when SSD prices will come down to a reasonable level ie about £1 for 5GB or around that level, as currently £1 for 1GB is abit steep.
Can anyone see them getting much cheaper this year, or will it be a long time to come for them to become much cheaper?
 
They won't likely get much cheaper if at all this year due to the shortage of mechanical drives. I think you could have a very long wait to be honest for prices to reach 5GB per £, as I remember buying drives years ago for £100 for 64GB so prices have barely come down at all.
 
Wouldn't a shortage of HDD's mean SSD's would come down in price, as there is more demand for them?
 
If they were getting more demand, would they not increase production, because from what I know the more you make the cheaper you can sell right?
 
Ultimately it should lead to them becoming cheaper again, but it'll take them a long time to build extra capacity as it's extremely high tech, especially the fabrication of the memory chips.
 
Forgive me for sounding like a noob here, but from what I've heard dont SSD's use flash memory, like a pendrive, we've been using them for years, why the hell are SSD's so expensive?
 
I read the OP and thought.....they don't make 5GB hard drives, what would be the point!? LOL

I'd love an SSD for my OS drive but the cost at the moment is just mental

Yeah they're really expensive. I'd love to have one as an OS drive but 65quid for 60quid is too much. HDD's are expensive enough as it is never mind SSD's :S
 
Triple Level Cell NAND (3-bit MLC) will arrive this year and HP Memristor tech is arriving in 2013.

TLC will offer ~3x the capacity of current MLC at the same cost, so you may see £1 / 2GB on the 25nm design node. Speeds will suffer though.
After that, I'm not sure we'll see any more NAND. The durability (read / write cycles) worsen significantly with 2-bit MLC and I'm sure TLC will be the same or worse, as the circuitry sizes shrink (20nm, 16nm).

HP Memristor technology is a complete unknown currently, but all the speculated numbers sound excellent. Predictions of 1petabit (125TB) per cubic cm, with layers of chips stacked up on eachother.

I would say at least 5 years before we see £1 per 5GB.

Solid state memory was never really supposed to replace spinning disks. Look at it more like a turbo booster for your system.

I doubt any of us will see a decent 500gb ssd for £30 like standard sata drives were not too long ago, even if hard drives were mass produced and available in their millions, imho.
 
Id pay 150quid for a 500gb SSD but 600quid for one is beyond a joke even second hand theyre too expensive :/
 
I'm not buying one as of yet, they can only get cheaper..... I also don't beleive the shortage of standard HDD's is due to the disaster in Thailand, maybe manufacturers/retailers are just pushing SSD sales because they are making money atm.... like they used to when HDD's reached 1TB last time.
