Hi, I have replaced my Crucial M4 128GB SSD with a new Samsung 840 250GB SSD, but I am worrying about its speed, my windows 7 instillation took a while, and installing the windows update is taking forever at the moment.

Is there anything I can check to make sure that the drive is running ok?

Cheers, Dan :)

check to see your still in ahci mode

use as ssd benchmark to see

theres also a fw update for the Samsung 840s

Just updated the Fw, and yea its already in Ahci mode. Still seems a bit slugish.

I will reinstall the OS again and see if that helps

Thanks, Dan

I know you have probably done it but you did plug the drive into the intel SATA port on
the motherboard didn't you?

If you plug it into the Marvell controller you get a drive that ends up being really slow,
I did this with mine and when I changed it over it flew through installs and all that kinda
stuff.

Heres an as ssd screenshot from mine on a brand new os install, (win 7 64 hp).

Should give you an idea of speeds for comparison.

Here's an earlier test of mine (before firmware and SATA driver updates). My PC booted/responded very fast in this configuration.

Well, there isn't an image (never had much success posting images, in this case from flickr, I'd be grateful for any hints and tips).

Basically my AS SSD Benchmark was very similar to bigdan's (before firmware and driver updates), and my PC was anything but slow.

If i remember correctly the black ones at the bottom are Intel sata 2 the white ones are intel sata 3 and the grey ones marvell. Did ya try resetting ya bios btw to optomized defaults? i Stuck a SSD games drive in mine the other week and it wouldnt work properly untill i had.

On your motherboard there at 3 blocks of SATA ports together and 1 block of ports together.

If you look at the board so that ports are on the right hand side of you the 2 ports at
top are controller by the Marvell controller. DONT USE THOSE.

The ports that are directly under that are the 1's that you need to use they will give you
the fastest speeds out of your SSD with them being the Intel Controller.

Hope this helps let us know how you get on mate.

Just to update, after updating the Firmware and checking the SATA ports, I got my SSD back up to speed, re-installed the OS and it didn't take long at all, plus windows updates didn't take long.

Thanks for your help guys
Dan
