Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive

I have the above SSD running on a SATA 2 board with the most up to date firmware! I get read times of roughly 260mbs, if I had a SATA 3 board would I get closer to the 550mbs advertised?

Yes.

If the SATAIII port is from a third party chip such as Marvel, then it will give worse performance than a native port such as some Z68 boards that can have Intel and Marvel SATAIII ports.

Will i notice it in the real world?

Like faster boot time etc.

Is it mostly for gaming etc and general usage?

I'm going to say no/not really, if you are thinking of getting a add-in card to give SATAIII ports on your board then it will most likely be using a Marvell chip or similar as I described above, if you are going to do a more significant CPU/Motherboard/Ram change (say to a Z68 based setup) then you will notice the extra performance of the faster CPU etc more.

Well i am planning on upgrading the rest of my system soon as well.

I was planning on getting the below board and a 2500k

Asus P8Z68-V PRO GEN3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard

Would this be a good choice for my SSD? Although it does say it uses a Marvel chip for the SATA 3?

I have the non pro version of that board and i get read times of 505 thats on the latest firmware but on a 64gb m4, the larger ssd's do perform quicker!

Yes it will be a good change and you will get the maximum speeds from the SSD, but the improved CPU performance etc will be the first thing that hits you.

That ASUS board does have two SATAIII ports from Intel (its the Marvel chip thats added extra on more expensive boards thats extra, not the other way around)
http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z68V_PROGEN3/#specifications
Intel® Z68 chipset :
2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), gray
4 x SATA 3Gb/s port(s), blue
Support Raid 0, 1, 5, 10
Support Intel® Smart Response Technology on 2nd generation Intel® Core™ processor family
Marvell® PCIe SATA 6Gb/s controller : *3
2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), navy blue
JMicron® JMB362 controller : *3
1 x eSATA 3Gb/s port(s), red

And its these you should use first.

So just to confirm the Intel ports are the ones i need to use for my SSD as they are the best?
