So i had a problem with one of my 500GB Seagate hard drives after various attempts to find out what it was i tried connecting it to a friends pc and it didn't show up in either, mine or his BIOS.

So i thought about getting a replacement SSD, use my current C drive (another 500GB Seagate) as my storage drive and getting a SSD drive as my new C drive and install everything to that.

My motherboard is an Abit IX38 QuadGT which is SATA II. I was thinking about a Crucial M4 128GB SSD. I've heard that because the drives are SATA III they work on SATA II but not as well. How well would the Crucial M4 work?

So about half read but similar write?

It should still be a huge improvement though shouldn't it?

Also is the only way to get SATA III to change the motherboard?

Yes,I can't tell sata2 from sata3 speeds,just as quick imo

Everyone should have an ssd nowadays, considering how cheap they are,one of the best things you can do to your pc

It is the quick random reads (4K size) and ~100x shorter access times that make SSD's so much more resposive compared to cheaper/larger HDD's. The sequential is handy for the odd times you might use it as a general user but is tertiary to the other two factors.

I've read that you need to have AHCI turned on in the BIOS for use with an SSD. My motherboard is an Abit IX38 QuadGT, does anyone know where i can find that setting? I've looked through the BIOS and can't find it.

Yea i've found it now.

Looking around at the Crucial M4 128gb and seeing the read/write speeds. There's some variety, why is that? I know i won't get these speeds because i'm only using SATA II but just wondered why are they different.

Crucial's own website says
Read:500MB/s Write:175MB/s

Amazon
Read:415MB/s Write:95MB/s

Overclockers
Read:550MB/s Write:220MB/s

Just tested my 500gb seagate and i'm getting about 100MB/s.

depends the 60gb are slower writes than the 128gb

and the newer 000f firmware improves read/writes

yeah considering the current price, see whats the best price out of the samsung 830 and the crucial m4 128gb drives, either would be great even if on sata2 port

well the samsung has better writes but you wouldnt notice tbh and it would be limited to 250mb per second on sata2,i think it has a mounting bracket included also, the m4 doesnt

Yes i did know about the bracket being included with the samsung but not the m4. After reading the other threads about not getting any support from Samsung about 830 i think the m4 is probably best.

If i bought one from America would it work. And how would that affect things like warranty?

Position would probably be like with mechanical HD's
IE. It would be considered a "grey import".

Think you would need to check the manufacturers WEB sites for the particular drive that you are interested in.
